There's cherry picking...
And there's being handed a cherry.
I keep my collection squirreled away in a SDB and hardly ever take them out of the bank. Yesterday, I fished the Dansco out of the bank to check for any PVC issues. Well, the VF35 1855 Seated Liberty half I purchased years ago off eBay turns out to be an 1855/854. A full-blown early die state as well. Huh? I must have looked at the coin with a 3X loupe, stuck it into the Dansco, and forgot about it. All the 1855/4's I've seen were later die states where only the 4 crossbar is visible, and just barely. The PCGS EF40 I have is one of these later die states.
Sorry, no pictures. If I had pictures, I would have discovered the overdate earlier. Here's a photo of an early die state copied from PCGS CoinFacts.
Who else has had a "cherry" handed to them without their knowledge at the time of purchase?

🎶 shout shout, let it all out 🎶
This coin on eBay may be another 1855/854 as well based on possible remnants of an 8 and the elongated "ball" on the first 5. Too bad it's in such poor shape.

I had a Lincoln 1911 D RPM 4 for years before I bothered to look closely at it. It was LDS so I must have not realized it when I first looked at it.

Good idea to revisit our old coins with a fresh set of eyes. Out of sight is out of mind. IMO. Nice! Peace Roy

It qualifies as "cherry picking from your own collection".
Definitely a pleasure!
It happened to me once, a 1918/7-D Buffalo nickel, after I had bought my grandpa's collection.
I bought a 1961 proof set in OGP because the half dollar was a possible Cameo.
After completing the purchase and driving back to my office I looked closer and discovered the half is the big DDR.
Big surprise for me.
Very nice @Barberian!
Nice!
This one.....
Turned into this one, after it was broken out......
I took a hit on the grade after I submitted it to ANACS
My 1961 DDR Proof Franklin cherry pick graded yesterday at PF67.
Always fun to cherry pick yourself. Better than missing it on Ebay, but being offered the same coin at 10x the ebay price.
The shop I help out with had one, unattributed until I took a closer look. Just as in the PCGS photo in the OP, you can see the top curve of the repunched "8" and the crossbar of the "4".

Just Cherry picked this 1838 O rpm huge O
"That's why I wander and follow La Vie Dansante"
Nice RPM.
Gerry says this F-101 is the more common die pair of the two for 1838-O;
R3 vs. R5 for the non-RPM F-102.

I'll bet the shop owner was delighted! That's about a $500 windfall.
Pulled this DDO from my silver melt pile.
After deciding to pass on this coin because of its poor condition (AG3/G4= AG3) and because I concurrently cherried ANOTHER 1855/854 off of eBay (a VF25 for $110), I suggested to the seller that he list his coin as the overdate and it should sell quickly for $54. He checked out the coin...bingo!...agreed it was a 55/54, thanked me, pulled the listing, and then raised the price from $54 to $135. (Facepalm) The coin is AG3 and worth considerably less than $135, IMO.
Did I commit a coin collector "sin" by letting a naive seller know what they had? I posted it here three weeks ago and apparently nobody was interested in buying it, either.
I'm a cherrypicker, and never thought I'd cherrypick myself, especially on a coin I had already cherrypicked. I was photographing a group of higher grade and beautifully-toned Mercury dimes I had bought cheaply at a show (cherrypicked) and when I was cropping the reverse image of this one, I noticed the right star on the reverse was doubled. Sure enough, a visit to Variety Vista confirmed it was a doubled die reverse, DDR-003. I submitted it to ANACS and it made MS66:
Both of the 1934-D doubled die obverses are becoming difficult to find. The VAM 4 with the small Mint mark has always been difficult but the VAM 3 used to be fairly easy to find. That's no longer true.
No. It benefits us all if coins are correctly attributed. Wouldn't you want someone to tell you that the coin you were trying to sell was much rarer than you thought it was. Reminds me of a person who went to a bank to do some Canadian FOREX. The teller told him that his $200 coin was gold and he should take it to a coin store. So he did, and the dealer gave him the appropriate amount for FOREX. Sigh.
So what variety is mine? She's pretty beat-up. Would it be worth submitting. With all those hits, she might come back detailed.
I don't think it's worth what it would cost to slab.
Thanks for that feedback koynekwest!
You're welcome! VAM 3 IS findable so keep lookin'.
Speaking of feedback...what do you write about an eBay seller you just cherry-picked? How do you score his "Item description"?
"Totally wrong description, which is great!"?
"Nice to score a rare coin for peanuts!"?
"A cherrypicker's delight!"?
I gave the seller 5-stars for his erroneous description. I didn't mention the cherrypick. Am I going to rim ding hell?
Yes, this one. It is the early die state of of HM-2. Usually this reverse die is found with a bisecting die crack. Only the fourth one known.!
I don't know but I'm bookmarking his eBay profile and checking his listing on a regular basis!!
gotta love the seated stuff. its all good as well
I got a pretty tough one unbeknownst to me and apparently the eBay seller. Figured it out a year or two later and PCGS agreed.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
I've had a few very scarce coins bought without the seller or I knowing how scarce they are. One of the most notable was this Feuchtwanger cent, variety 3-D. It lay for over 30 years in my collection before I discovered it is a rarity-7 variety.
Another one was this 1821 Capped Bust dime, variety JR-2. it is currently rated as R-5+. It's not in great shape, but I collect early dimes so I appreciate its significance.
I started another thread recently upon discovering my 1874-S half that I've had for a decade is an R-8 (WB-4, 2nd one known). https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/comment/12918957#Comment_12918957
For me, this year has been about studying varieties and "cherries", among other things, hammering home the importance of researching and reading up on the series you collect. These are things I should have addressed years ago but I've kept the SLH collection locked away in a bank SDB for years. I'm now rediscovering what I have in my collection. Some nice surprises and some bad revelations (PVC damage). Heck, I didn't even know I had an 1874-CC half in my collection (G4) already when I purchased another at the FUN show a couple of years ago. Also, I now need an 1855-P normal date because all of my 1855-P's are 55/54's. On the other hand, my raw EF40 46-O tall date off eBay has a considerable PVC "crust" on the reverse that I'm trying to remove now with acetone and mineral oil.
