My Friend Has this 1877s Trade Dollar, coin WAS housed in a Anacs AU50 Details holder Heavily Damaged. Upon looking at it he is convinced it is a Mint Error.
According to him the, “e Pluribus unum” on the reverse is doubled.
This Coin is out of shape, Bent, reshaped and has the appearance of something pressed into the obverse. Amazingly the coin has decent luster.
Any ideas of what is going on with this coin?

Looks damaged to me.

The coin is damaged.
Could be overstruck with a false die, i.e. PMD.
If it was a true hub-doubling it would show doubling in other areas in addition to EPU. I believe the coin is just damaged.
I see an extra "O" on the "F" of "OF".
I believe it was TDN that saw a heavily damaged TD with a question and asked "does it matter"
for an academic question - I also see the "O" hiding in the "F" of "OF"
My opinion: Damaged, possibly while trying to create and "error".
Does it possibly pop open? (Opium dollar.)
