I had filled up all of my science requirements in College in Geology and Chemistry so on my first and several subsequent trips to Virginia City, I wanted to see a piece of the "Blue" rock that had caused so much trouble and later turned out to be high grade Silver Ore. I have asked all up and down the strip for about 25 years for someone to show me a piece of this rock and in about 8 trips to Virginia City, I have yet to see a piece of this ore. I would have thought that somewhere there would be a display showing what caused such a ruckus back then, but no luck! In the Mine tour, even the ore vein is faked!...Sigh

Great pic's thanks so mu h for posting and xnaring the family two thumbs up

Thanks. The railroad connection between Virginia City and Carson City must have been a challenge given the high elevation of Virginia City. The railroad history is chronicled in a Railway museum in Carson City and of course was integral to the transport of the silver and gold that was minted into coinage at the Carson City Mint.

    1) Coin press #1 produced all CC minted coinage 1870-1874. (it was the only coin press at the CC mint in those years)
    2) Two more presses were brought in in 1875, and remained in service through 1893. To my knowledge, there is no way of telling whether a CC minted coin dated 1875 through 1877 was struck on coin press #1 vs one of the other presses at the mint. Unless they assigned different denominations separate to one of the three presses, and that is documented, there is about 1 in 3 chance of a CC coin dated 1875-1877 being struck on coin press #1.
    3) In 1878, coin press #1 broke. It was repaired locally, and used only for striking CC Morgan silver dollars between 1878 and 1893. Again, to my knowledge, coin press #1 may or may not have shared Morgan striking duties with the other two presses between 1878-1893. IOW, if it is bears a CC MM, but is not a Morgan dollar in the the years 1878-1893, then it was not likely struck on coin press #1. And, if it is an 1878-1893 CC Morgan, then there is an at least 1 in 3 chance of being struck on coin press #1.

You are 100% correct... on you observation on the post and the dates you posted. So hopefully others will read and realize the dates and what coins were struck on press #1.
Thank you for pointing this out.

A little late to the party. This was the first item I had identified as being struck at Carson City long after the Mint was decommissioned, and after reading somewhere that the site still occasionally produced medals with the CC mintmark.

BUMMER...I mean thank you for the depressing information. Well at least I can imagine a third of my GSA’s came from press number 1! Please don’t correct me I’m depressed enough; but enlightened.

Sorry David but it was another member not I who gave you the that information. Cheer up my friend....
