Doubled Date striking error?

Really cool! What causes this? Striking error? Why just the date and not the whole coin? Added value?

    Welcome to the forum! :)

    A nice example of mechanical/machine doubling. :)

    No added value. :/

It's mechanical doubling. Notice how the features are flat. That's due to a die that's loose during the strike, not a die that that received a shifted impression from the working hub.

Wexler has a good explanation on his site under the tab "Worthless Doubling"

  • I greatly appreciate the responses! However, I still can't picture how it happens that just the date is misaligned and the rest of the features are not?

It's not misaligned. The die and/or planchet move slightly during the striking process. MD is rarely on every design feature (although it can be).
