Priceless to me - any value on the open market?

pointfivezeropointfivezero Posts: 1,611 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm a somewhat regular poster on the US Coin Forum but this is my first post here. Looking for opinions on this set I inherited from my father many years ago. He was City Manager of our hometown, which also happens to be Carl Sandburg's birthplace. My Dad attended a ceremony for the introduction of the 13 cent stamp in 1978 on the 100th anniversary of Sandburg's birth. He as presented with this set for attending. My father died a year after this ceremony and I have owned this set since.

Just wondering if it has any value outside the sentimental value to our family. I'm no longer young and have no children. Would appreciate any advice:

It is an interesting item and does have some value. Just how much value depends on demand and I have no idea how much there might be today. Overall demand for first day covers and first day programs has fallen in recent years. Your item is much more than just the cover and the program so a specialist collector of Carl Sandburg items would probably like to add it to their collection. Finding that collector is the problem as he may not be a stamp collecting specialist.

    Thanks @291fifth. Appreciate the information!

I agree with 291fifth. A very nice item and should sell but may take time to find a specific collector.

Unusual with the fancy and personalized folder.

Rather than try to sell it, why not donate it to the Galesburg library or historical society?

It seems like a nice piece of local history and I'm sure future generations of residents may find it interesting as well.

@pruebas - that is a great thought. Thanks for sharing. I'm sure this is exactly what my father would have wanted. He loved his little town.

    Beautiful piece of history!

The right person for this is probably not a stamp collector but a Carl Sandburg fan.
