I received a package from Ontario to Seattle this week. Looking at the tracking, it scanned into Memphis at 12:05pm and left at 6:39pm same day. Customs could have flagged the package, or maybe it's just an unlucky package.
In my experience it's worth following up after 3-4 days of no movement. Sometimes it's just slow, or submitting a query pushes it along and occasionally they need additional information but seemingly didn't contact anyone to get that info.
I'm a FedEx courier and have noticed a big increase in customs hold on packages. They arrive at the station, and receive a notification not to deliver because they have not cleared customs yet.

I have known USPS packages to be in customs for as much as a month.
Maybe it’s in quarantine for 14 days
2 years ago I had some soccer stuff (hat/hoodie) shipped from Germany, it spent a solid 3 weeks in customs.
And it showed up looking like it got punted across the pond.
