TrueViews in CoinFacts question

TunisTunis Posts: 473 ✭✭✭✭

Some of the coins I collect are listed in the TrueView section of CoinFacts as examples of a particular grade. What goes into having these images selected? Will they always be there or do they get replaced? I kind of like seeing my coins on the website. Does anyone have an experience/answer to share?

I would guess that normally the top three graded Trueviews would be displayed...there are always exceptions.

I believe they get cycled out over time as more examples of the same grade get photographed, that's what has happened with a few I have. The higher graded ones seem to stick around longer.

One of mine was there and taken off when I bought it. It had been in a registry set so I don’t know if that was a factor.

PCGS can not make up their mind on many issues. Some of the bigger dealers did not like the fact that you could look up coins in coinfacts and see that they were upgraded. So they made PCGS change how they let us view photos. Money talks! There were certain coins that were submitted multiple times to get an upgrade and you would have 10+ truviews of the same coin. Showing the coin was obviously maxed out and probably over graded. Information dealers did not want you to have and PCGS caved to their demands!

As new higher and/or perhaps equally graded coins are graded and imaged those will be moved in and old ones will be replaced. I do not know if this is done on a regular schedule or just as new ones are sent in for grading.

No one made PCGS make any changes.

Poor choice of words on my part. Vigorously persuaded would be a better term.

I've had a few as listed examples. They get changed out every so often.

I have numerous coins pictured on Coinfacts which is really cool to me. I think they were just needing more of the modern cent pics. The first I know of was a 96d ms68 then I saw it on a JB coins video. Shout out 🤣

Sounds like I should enjoy them while they are there........

It's funny you ask this. At one time in one weeks time. I had three on the site at once. I think it's cool as well. Now, youre going to make me check again. Lol.

The issue relayed by the dealer is that customers wouldn't pay up for higher grades when they could see it was graded lower like 9 out of 10 times. The new approach solves this issue.

In the end, the current approach seems to work okay for seeing a variety of coins. Some coins still have a decent number of specimens.

Where I hear things hurt is for researching varieties.

What you see as solving an issue I see as taking away my ability to research a coin. If you are not in the business and just a collector coinfacts use to be a great place to research and learn. It is still okay at best but not nearly what it used to be. There is only a fraction of the truviews that there used to be. I used to be able to look at a good number of coins at certain grades to help me determine if a coin was up to snuff. Try that now and you will be greatly disappointed. I would be willing to pay to have the old coinfacts back!

I didn't mind seeing multiples of the same coin in CoinFacts myself, but I can see where it could cause issues for others.

Changing it solved the issue for the particular dealer. It probably also solved a submission issue for PCGS.

Its not the multiples of the same coin I miss its the multiple coins of the same grade!

Perhaps there are other ways to get more people to add their photos than rewinding the clock. Perhaps there should be a campaign to get more people to add their coins to the registry?

CLCT stock is doing really well, and I can see how the current approach could contribute to the bottom line.

A lot of mis-information here on CoinFacts TruViews posted. The top three graded coins (with TruViews) will be shown for each date/mm. Otherwise, a coin has to be in a registry to be publicly seen on CoinFacts these days. Coins are not "cycled out". They may be overtaken by a higher graded example or an example being added to a registry.

Thank Laura from Legend for being the driving factor to convince PCGS to remove the vast majority of coins from being available for view on Coinfacts. It was a great resource for collectors, but it was more important for her to protect her profits and upgrades...

Another issue she had was playing the bean game.
If a coin didn't pass CAC, she would have it regraded for a new number & try again.
People would copy these public TrueViews and wonder what was going on with a coin getting re-graded over & over.

It was harder to catch because PCGS would delete the old cert# as soon as they re-graded but you could follow the submissions for the more rare stuff like 29 saints.

Gutting CoinFacts is coming back to bite though.
Collectors who have public viewable sets, & therefore coins that can be seen in CoinFacts, tend to only have the best examples of a particular grade.

When a person views a typical dealer coin, it will often appear over-graded compared to CoinFacts.
It's because collectors can spend years trying to find that one example to put in their sets.
