They were being unnecessarily harsh to the poster who suggested this dealer. Guess no good deed goes unpunished. I’ll admit I don’t know anyone in the industry who can swing the $200k it probably takes to buy a 100 oz bar.

As the starter of this post, I was not “being unnecessarily harsh” to the poster who suggested Warren.
I asked him why he made that suggestion. His return answer was basically Because I said so.
That is what one could call “being unnecessarily harsh”.

Let me clarify. It was not the comment of any single poster. Rather, I was speaking to what appeared to be a pile on of an innocent poster who appeared to be making an effort to be helpful.

Now if the poster (Mr. PQ) is in fact Mr. Mills, then I certainly appreciate the humor in the matter. 🤣

He could have given a reason when asked. It was a very odd response when recommending someone for a $200k deal.

I'm not so certain about the taxes. As long as it's a swap, precious metal for precious metal, not gold for a house etc, the you could do a 1031 exchange. Tax deferred until the silver gets sold.

    bob :)

My understanding is that gold is effectively cash....even though it is taxed at the higher capital gain rate of collectibles. Like-Kind exchanges work for collectibles of the same fabric. But bullion is not collectible unless it's a vintage bar or something. I wouldn't consider one PM like gold for say another PM like silver to be a LKE. Totally different things. It would be like doing an LKE in the SM/futures markets in doing a direct swap of beef for pork. If you could trade gold for gold or gold for plat w/o a tax basis, then you should be able to trade Euro's for Dollars....or any other currency pairs as a LKE.

Contact PNG gold coin dealer Bruce Kutcher, or Heritage, Rarcoa, etc. They all knows the ins and outs of trading/selling gold bullion and coins. If there's a way to do a deal, they would know.

I was not up to date. Since Jan 1, 2018 only real estate is allowed in like kind exchanges. No longer is art, personal property of any kind, collectibles, machinery, vehicles or intellectual property allowed. This came into being with the Tax Cut and Jobs Act. So, coins are not able to be done in a 1031 exchange anymore.
It's pretty much now limited to real property.

Just to relate a recent experience with Apmex and JM Bullion. I emailed for their buy price on 21 Morgan dollars and common Peace dollars early this week, nice problem free VF-XF coins. No cleaned or culls. Had 1,000 coins to sell. With Silver at $24 plus. They came in at $14 and $13 respectively. So seller beware also is something that should be remembered. BTW sold them at $22 elsewhere. Only recounting my experience. Others may have had better results than myself. My local B and M dealer has sold to Apmex before and was satisfied with their prices.

Guess, I'm not up to date any more either. Didn't know they removed everything from L-K-E's except RE. Guess, they wanted their cut now on all those other items. Ironic, that it was part of a "tax cut."
