WillieBoyd2WillieBoyd2 Posts: 5,273 ✭✭✭✭✭

The National Football League (NFL) team the Washington Redskins is dropping it's team name and it's logo which was copied from the United States Indian Head or Buffalo nickel obverse.

The team is looking for a new name, possibly they can flip the coin over.

    Washington buffalos.
    Hmmmm,
It has a ring to it😃

The Buffalo Bills' original logo was copied from the reverse of the buffalo nickel. When the Redskins played the Bills in Super Bowl XXVI in 1992 I was hoping they'd use the Buffalo Nickel or a larger replica of that coin in the coin flip at the beginning of the game. Alas, no such luck.

Buffalo Bills snagged that one. Mercury dime obverse?? Something to do with fast feet there...

The standing Buffalo was the teams 3rd logo, although perhaps its first in the NFL rather than the AFL. Other than being a standing Buffalo, I'm not exactly sure that it was inspired by the Buffalo nickel - it's facing the wrong way, if nothing else.

I like this one, never adopted tho.

I guess we need to get back to coins.

The Washington Warriors has a nice ring to it. That way they can keep the Indian motif.

I totally agree with this. But to keep it coin related I'll post this-

I’ve read that many Native Americans liked and appreciated the buffalo nickel when it was introduced. Especially as it represented a non-idealized representation.

Team names change over time for a variety of reasons. I do like the sound of Washington Buffalos. I think it works.

Having the Washington Buffaloes and Buffalo Bills a few hundred miles apart simply won't work.

It was inevitable. Sensibilities change. Life goes on. Let's hope there's a little football to enjoy this year. Somehow I can't see there being much urgency to the games if they're played in an empty stadium.

Buffalos are great animals to view, especially at a distance, but up close they are very smelly. :p

Thought I'd run a few ideas up the flagpole here:

    The Washington Generals
    The Washington Monuments
    The Washington Revolution
    The Washington Cherry Tree Choppers
    The Washington Country Fathers

No, I won't be quitting my day job, whatever that is these days... B)

And the "Native Americans" that designed the logo are very upset about this decision.

Huge Redskins fan here, despite the misery and lousy ownership of recent years.

Time to change the name, though. Marshall (earlier owner of the Redskins) was the last to integrate the team (he was angling for the team to be considered "the team of the South").

I hope we can keep great fight song in some form ("Hail to the Redskins").

My son (an equally huge Redskins fan) jokingly suggested the name name "The Washington Racial Slurs." I hope they do better than that!

    "Hail to the ______!!!"

I guess all Buffalo Nickels and Indian Head Cents MUST be melted immediately!! Anyway, even as a kid in the 1960's the Cleveland Indians logo seemed much more stupid, insulting and offensive than the Redskin's name and depiction.

I could envision team mgt. soliciting public input into a new name.

The basketball Washington Generals lost 800 some games in a row to the Harlem Globetrotters, probably low on the list of names for the gridiron squad
