I have heard that the Carson City mint workers spent a lot of time prepping the dies and planchets in 1876 to commemorate the centennial of the United States. I have seen a few, really nice, 1876 cc coins, so I believe the initial statement to be true.

pcgs lists a few designated PL coins in this era if you check the pops. i was a little shocked initially but pleased.
