I just received this 1903 Yen today in the mail. Its a very nice specimen with very few marks. I will send it in to be graded at the end of the week with a few others.

    That piece has a tremendous amount of mint bloom or frost!

    Have to love out the Japanese put the weight as 416 grains - like grains were a unit used in Japan, NOT. Obviously it was meant to appeal to foreign trade. Brilliant!

    It was in a plastic capsule. I anticipate MS64 for the average.

    Looks nice and frosty. The Japanese market favors white vs. toned, and one can find dip residue'd coins in slabs. I would give it a serious acetone bath and thorough (and gentle) rinse just to be safe in case it got a quick before being sold.

    Looks like a very nice coin. The hits on the chrysanthemum might hold it back a tad, but it's nice there isn't a lot of chatter in those big empty fields on the reverse. Too many look like they got the post office treatment*, very banged up and lifeless. This looks better than that :smile:

    *no disrespect to the post office...they do a good job and I'm usually very happy with them... but my most recent eBay purchase were some dumbbells to complete my COVID-era workout space, and somehow between the seller throwing in 2x15# and 1x12# into a priority mail box with only a modicum of bubble wrap, and what appears to be tread marks on the box, somehow the 12# weight was actually broken. I didn't think it was possible. We are talking the basic cast iron CAP hex weights. One hex end just snapped off. Seller didn't pack well, but the box was nearly destroyed. Of course 42# of cast iron with room to move wasn't helpful. But, I digress.

    Well I was about 1 number from what I hoped for. Was hoping 64.

    Nice looking coin! I see a bit more chatter in the fields on the NGC shot, so the 63-64 range seems reasonable and I can get the 63 they gave you. The frostiness looks great!

    Nice coin and outcome. Based on the pictures in the OP, I was a bit worried it might "details" grade for cleaning. Guess that was just the pix.

    I see it got the @stork stamp of approval. In Japanese coins, that's the opinion I respect.

    Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.
