UGLIEST $2.5 Indian EVER...remember? GRADE & Conservation process posted...

This has to be a GTG. Well, did it straight grade? Did it get a details grade? Take a guess.
Remember this?
With some loving care, I turned it into this...
And our hosts holdered it in this...

Personally, I want to say it details graded.
But, I'm going to say it straight graded AU50.
Is there a prize?

AU55 or AU details, hard to tell without seeing it in hand.

I know the answer so won't participate. Great restoration job though!!

It's a great looking coin. There is no way it would details grade. It's definitely a high end AU coin.

Nicely done. These are hard to grade period, harder still from a photo..... so I won’t even try. I like it though. Good luster, some field “stuff”, maybe wear??

Bump for the grade.
Great job getting it into an AU-58 holder.
Is the restoration yours, Bob? If so, wow, what a great job. Care to share how you did it? Great post.

Great work on the restoration, justly rewarded. Congrats!
Yes, the conservation is mine. I'll post the steps later on. You're not going to believe what I used.
Cheers

Awesome, now you should send it to the CACS so we can see the full circle hypocrisy of this whole game. Love it, killer job on the restoration. You should start a business (If you haven't already). Regards!!

58 all day long. You gotta love the bias against raw coins sent in. Buy the coin not the holder.
Look forward to the steps.

Well, it was obviously in a fire, so I had to determine what was stuck to the surface. It appeared to be burned plastic residue along with other foreign matter. So, I used a combination of things, but never combined the chemicals. I did it in stages.
The first stage, I began with the mildest cleaner (Simple Green) in a heated ultrasonic cleaner set at 60° C for two hours. I wrapped the coin in a microfiber lens cleaning cloth to preclude contact scratches with the stainless steel and wire basket. This step removed the grime. I did not expect it to remove the other residue.
The second stage, I did the same thing only this time I used acetone and lowered the temp to 30° C to minimize evaporation. That got rid of a little more.
The third stage, I used a toothpick that I softened the tip on to avoid scratches to pick out the incused design. The original surfaces were beginning to show through at this point.
The fourth stage, I used (are you ready for this?) Easy-Off oven cleaner. I wrapped the coin in microfiber soaked with oven cleaner and let it set overnight. The difference was nothing short of amazing. Removed almost all of the crud.
Fifth stage, I used Goof Off Heavy-Duty Paint Stripper. Lightly daubed it on with a Q-Tip and worked it with the softened end of the toothpick. This took about 20-minutes.
Final stage, I did a dip in EZest, rinsed in acetone, rinsed in DI water, and that was the result.
Keep in mind that the handling at every step was done very gently. I could just as easily ruined the coin if I got even the slightest bit aggressive.
There you have it!
Cheers
Bob
Nope! Not kidding.
That’s incredible. You could probably get a job at PCGS doing conservation. What do you think the coin will look like in a year?
Considering I didn't leave any residue, the coin should not change.
Cheers
Bob

Thanks for sharing!
I must say that using the Easy-Off oven cleaner was without a doubt, very innovative.
Congrats on the great results.
