Has anyone else sent in a raw coin and PCGS automatically assigned it a minor variety?

I currently submitted a raw 1846-O $10 Gold Eagle to PCGS, description #8595.
I just checked the current status and the coin is in 'encapsulation.'
To my surprise the coin is now an 1846/'5'-O $10...description #8596.
It's considered a minor variety, but hey......that was very cool of our hosts.

Yes. There are some attributions that come with the standard service. One example would be the 1886 type 1 and type 2 Indian Cents. Another would be the 1865 plain five and fancy five. There are many others.
Apparently only one obverse die was used for the 1846-O $10,
but the artifacts in the 6 are more visible in some of the die states.
Also, this is not a true overdate, but is a repunching present in the date gang punch.
The same date gang punch was also used for one of the 1846-O half dollar obverses.

There is a similar story for the so-called "1861/0" half dime.
It is also not an overdate; just some stuff in the date gang punch which
shows up on several obverses when the date gang punch was pressed into the die deeply.
I bought a 1909-S Lincoln Cent in an NGC Holder. It crossed at grade but was labeled as S over Horizontial S which did me no good as it wouldn't fit in the Registry slot that I purchased it for.
Seems like you could appeal to the "gods of the registry" to have it included. Afterall, an S over Horizontal S is still a 1909-S!!

A crossover submission of Barber Quarters was returned to me yesterday. One was an 1893 O with an obvious struck-thru error on the cheek. PCGS noted the Mint Error as Struck-Thru on the label; it was a simple Economy submission. I think it's great that they'll do that!

Not great if you sent it for your registry. I sent a raw buff once and they did the same and then no longer was acceptable by my registry as it was a variety.

It's funny, Me and my dealer friend were just discussing this same issue yesterday. I asked him if PCGS would search out the variety for me? He said, no! So, am I to think if I send in a 1864 Indian, would they be the one to finalize any variety on the coin? Whether it's a "L" or not or whether it's a RPM? Or what Snow variety is it?🤨

They have a list off variety's they will attribute if you pay for the service. Not all Snow numbers are covered in this service.
