My New Book on Canada Specimen One Cent Coins is Now Available

bosoxbosox Posts: 1,501 ✭✭✭✭

The Royal Canadian Numismatic Association is exclusively offering a newly released book for sale on their website. “Past & Nearly Perfect” by Rob Turner explores the pattern, trial, proof, and specimen large cents coined by the Royal Mint, Heaton, and the Ottawa Mint between 1857 and 1920. Some of these fascinating coins serve as a step-by-step guide of how the adopted designs evolved. Others were coined as presentation pieces to dignitaries, collectors, and museums. Collectively, they represent the finest, and some of the rarest, Canadian large cents known to exist. The 174-page hardcover book contains full-color photos and population estimates for each type of special-strike cent.

Disclosure: All proceeds go to benefit the RCNA. A grant for the printing costs was provided by the J. Douglas Historical Research Foundation. The author has donated the book to the RCNA and receives no compensation from its sale.

    Thank you for the heads-up.

I went to the RCNA site and attempted to buy the book, but don't know if I was successful. They have an odd phrase listed on the bottom of the order that states-

"IMPORTANT! In order for us to receive your order details we need you to remember to click on the "Return to Royal Canadian Numismatic Association" link after completion/confirmation of your payment . Thank you for remembering this important step!"

When I clicked "Buy Now" it took me to PayPal where I paid for the book, but then was brought back to a blank page on the RCNA site that did not populate with any information at all even though I refreshed several times. Finally, I manually backed through the pages I was in until I came to a page with a link for the RCNA and clicked it to get back to the original, filled-out order form. My PayPal account shows the transaction, but the ambiguous and unusual process might turn folks off.

Tom - If the paypal went through, it should be okay. I sent an email to the webmaster to make sure. Thanks for the purchase. - Rob

I'd like to order the book but the shipping is 50% of the price of the book ($20 to the US).

Any plans to have a vendor in the US at some point?

    Congrats on it's publication though!

No plans for a US vendor. Postal costs are high in both countries. It is actually much more expensive to ship a book from the US to Canada, than from Canada to the US.

I ordered the book and had the same problem as Tom. The redirect is trying to go to https://www.rcna.ca/book/complete.php which must not exist.

I have received confirmation of payment from PP. Looking forward to the book!

This is a great book for anyone interested in Canadian Large Cents and early Canadian Specimen/Proof minting process. Superb photos of very rare coins.

I received the book today and it is very well made. I'm looking forward to getting deeper into it, but it seems like a tremendous resource for numismatics and history.

My book arrived and it's excellent. Unfortunately, it was slightly damaged in transit. Apparently, the RCNA got some complaints and offered everyone replacements, so a perfect one is on the way.

So, DOES ANYONE WANT my slightly damaged copy? Just some lightly bumped corners and a light crease to the front cover. If you're a not a perfectionist, it's a great deal. $35 via PayPal to the RCNA. I'll pick up the shipping cost.

Thanks, Mr. E. Yes, they had a few packaging issues in the first shipment and have offered to replace any damaged books. I hope you like the book.

Same here. I didn’t respond yet.

When my book arrived the packaging was a little dinged up, as well, but I thought the slight bending of the corners did not merit an exchange.

The RCNA book review is in the June CN Journal, which is now available in the http://www.rcna.ca members section. The paper CN Journal will be in the mail to RCNA members any day now. The review is similar to the E-sylum review, except it shows several page photos that give readers a better sense of the book. If you are on the fence about buying the book from the RCNA, check it out. All proceeds go to them.

The RCNA will eventually be selling the books at coin shows in Canada, but who knows when shows will start up again. It may be quite a while before that happens.

The RCNA has also arranged for the book to be available through Trajan Publishing's coin and stamp supply company. If you order $150 in goods from them, they offer free shipping within Canada. Here is the link'
