1916 Standing Liberty Quarter Proof. Is there a known example?

    You actually have one of those 1964s? I looked em up in my coin book says they were all destroyed, but its entirely possibly you could have one, I saw one at a coin show but I'm pretty sure it was a replica...since it was like...4 dollars

    According to Breen, at least 2 are known. One is in the Smithsonian.
    They are Matte Proof without M designers initial.

    This is the first I have ever heard of a proof 1916. To the best of my knowledge, there wern't any proof struck. The SLQ wasn't struck until late in 1916 and there wern't any 1916 Barber quarters in Proof either.

    Although the patterns were sharply struck and I have not had any in hand to examine, yet there very well may be a proof pattern. I defer to Just Having Fun and Jay Cline.

    Shoot, yeah! Right in the same box as my 1804 dollar, 1933 double eagle and 1913 Liberty nickel!

    I know of no (unquestionable) Proof 1916 Standing Liberty Quarters, other than patterns. A small number of alleged 1916 and 1917 Proofs have been offered over the years, but they were suspect, at best.

    Breen also says he saw 2 of the 1917 proof type 1 standing quarters with the matte finish.
    I am only quoting information from his Encyclopedia of Colonial and Proof coins.
    The information may not be accurate.
    Is there any way to tell if a 1916 standing proof quarter is indeed in the Smithsonian collection?

    Ray, over the years, many of the more esoteric Proof coins that Walter Breen had written about (some of them even having appeared with specific letters from him expressing his opinion that they were Proofs) have been dismissed by modern day numismatists and grading services. I am not picking on him, but rather just stating facts. image That said, he was still an extraordinary researcher in many ways.

    No idea. But you'd think that if someone as prominent in the SLQ world as Cline had such a coin, it would've made its way to the marketplace by now ( and made a big splash, too - I think such a unique proof would pull down **more ** than $1 million these days ). I am rapidly scanning thru his SLQ book right now, and while he mentions the 1916 and 1917 matte proofs, he is citing others like Breen and Neidigh, but I can't yet find where he himself confirms such a coin, nor does he post an image.
