I've been using this camera for quite some time. Just recently, seemingly spontaneously, a spot started appearing in my pics. You can see it here, on the rim at 2:.30 on the quarter, and between 3rd and 4th star on the right on the half. It is not on the lens, and I don't think it is on the interior mirror. I don't think I was changing lens' before it appeared. Is it possible for a "dead spot" to develop internally? Or, what and where might this be?

It’s dust. The sensor needs cleaning. It’s very common on DLSRs, especially the older ones that didn’t have any form of vibrating sensor to clean. Cleaning the sensor is fairly straightforward if you’re comfortable with it. There are various ways. Myself, I use Eclipse cleaner and swabs. There are other methods.
You might be able to dislodge it if you purchase a Rocket Air Blaster. That would be the easiest and safest way but it won’t work with anything lodged or stuck. You can find a lot of videos on YouTube for how to clean a Nikon sensor or use a rocket blaster.
Only thing I can think of is mirror or lens and you have discounted both of those.
