WORD! It's the same coin. My Crystal Ball says so! The odds of this not being the same coin would require me to hold my zero button down so long I would fall asleep before enough were posted!
If anyone has the auction catalog listed in the opening post, it would be great to get a high resolution scan.
Here is what I know about the provenance:
March, 2010 - Purchased at Whitman show by Northern Nevada Coin in an NGC holder. Labeled as "Wagner collection"
1979 - Private Treaty -
June, 1976 - Bowers and Ruddy - Dr. Edward B. Willing auction, from E.A. Carson collection, Lot 72 - $16,000
November, 1956 - Stacks - B. Frank collection, Lot 622 - $3,300
Possible other appearances:
November, 1946 - Stacks - Charles Deetz collection, Lot 1512 - $1,090 (The discussion above)
1937 - Stacks (The reference comes from the November, 1956 auction entry. However, the only Stacks auction appearance in 1937 appears to be for an uncirculated example.
If anyone knows who Wagner was, or how he obtained it, I would be grateful for the information.
The OP image is from the ANS copy of the catalog, scanned under sponsorship of Newman Portal. I've referenced the raw scan file and extracted this image, which may be slightly better. It's a halftone to begin with, so won't be good. Same coin, imho.
My untrained eye says 100% it's the same coin. Besides the knee mark, I see marks that correspond taking into account what grainy photographs do to fine features that match up. Fun exercise...thanks for presenting it

I don't think so.
How much do you want to bet (if you feel so inclined)?
I will give you 10 to 1 odds that the images posted are of the same coin.
Image from the 1976 Bowers & Ruddy sale of the same coin--
Nice analysis. Still, I wouldn't bet my house on a 75 year old photo.
100% Positive BST transactions
In this photo there are more indicators in the fields that shows it's the OP's coin, not to mention it shows the matching rim damage. Good find!
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

Hear is the 1957 auction image. It shows the rim damage more clearly.
