Our most recent PCGS Rare Coin Market Report marks the debut of a new regular segment called “Notable Notes,” in which we profile a particularly remarkable piece of paper money that our graders at the newly launched PCGS Banknote have come across.

Our first note, seen above, the Lincoln Porthole $5, is one of the most sought-after pieces among the expansive catalog of United States large-size notes. 5,000 are estimated to survive today across all grades, and they are particularly scarce in higher grades.

Yummy! Much like Pavlov's dog, my mouth is watering.A suggestion would be to please show the reverse as well.

It's been 3 days so far and haven't heard a reply. Shouldn't someone be visiting forum sites like these once a day to build some good will with collectors? Maybe when you do visit here again, the Social Media Team can answer this question for the rest of the forum. Can you please explain why a grade of 55 PPQ "which has historically been an About Uncirculated grade" is now a Gem Uncirculated grade? Or perhaps (more likely) it has something to do with cutting and pasting images onto holders. I for one have never received a note back from grading that was so well centered inside its holder.

  • Hello all, it has been corrected to read About Unc. Thank you

Where did the estimate of 5000 surviving come from?

To give context to @TennisCoach ’s post, this is the original image posted with the GEM UNC 55 PPQ designation (oops) on the holder.

To add to my previous response, how did this happen. Was it reholdered ? Was it done by cut and paste ? Was this done another way ? I'm just trying to understand the rationale and purpose as why it was done this way. Not to cause ruckus with anyone !!!
    Thank you !!! :)

Appears to have been reholdered. Note that 'Speelman & White' are no longer on the front, nor is the Cert number.

Looks to be a boo-boo by our host, now corrected.

Hey, it happens to the best of us. It's all good.

Yes they are. That was the purpose of the O/P-to inform us that they are accepting submissions.
