Mid-Century Gaming Token

Not sure if this is the right section, but can't find one on tokens. This one has given the internet at large a bit of trouble, so I don't expect and exact answers, but I'm trying to track down the story behind this token.

On the obverse is a lady liberty (similar to the portrait on a Coronet Large Cent coin) but the reverse has the seal and motto of the Order of the Garter (Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense) from Britain. It's clearly a private mint (possibly from the California Gold Rush Era) but any extra information would be great!

So the Google says the Latin slogan and 3 feather plume is the Prince of Wales crest. If the obv had a young Queen it would be a 1840-60 gaming counter. Someone used a Liberty obv with the PofW rev as a gaming counter. Peace Roy

  • Exactly, that's what's giving everyone trouble. The crest appears on TONS of coins, but normally you'd see Queen Elizabeth on the obverse, not a Liberty. The real question we're running into is whether or not this is a spiele token from Wales/Germany, or something minted in America...

When you look at the overall htt and cwt die marriages. Die sinkers appeared to mix and match alot. And not accurate record keeping. IMO. Peace Roy
