Proof Type Set

I have been working slowly on completing a PCGS certified US Type Set following the Dansco 7070 coins. As the set has grown (~65% complete now), I’ve decided that I don’t like the look of proof coins with circulation strike coins. I’ll be completing the 7070 type set with just circulation strike coins and removing the few proofs that I currently have.

I do, however, love the look of proof coins individually! Proof trade dollars are just awesome! Does anyone have a good suggestion for a Proof US Type set to follow where any 1 coin wouldn’t surpass $2,000 with most coins significantly cheaper? What would the stand outs of the set be? For the 7070 circulation strikes for me, the standout coins are the two double eagles.

    You should be able to put together a pretty nice but not complete set of proof type from 1859 to current within your budget. No Gold.

    Forget the 1909-VDB penny in any level of Matte Proof. A small mintage plus a guy who decided to corner the market has cut just about everyone else out the running. Everything else in the 20th century, that was issued on a normal basis is possible.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    Thanks all for the ideas so far. I’ll do some research starting at 1859 and forward.

    Also debating on doing a Proof Nickel set. Hansen’s set looks amazing and nickels hold a special place for me as roll hunting for a complete Jefferson set from circulation is how I really got into coins ~15 years ago while in college. The local banks knew me as ‘the nickel guy’. I’d go through a couple hundred dollars of nickels a week.

    How about a certain year proof set instead? Pick a year where a trade dollar is offered.

    Just about finished my proof type 1859 and later. No gold, Left out a few for now such as the Shield 5c w/rays (looks much like MS anyway). Very cool to do and they display beautifully. Also used birth or anniversary years in some cases to add to the challenge. Always up for an excuse to collect.
