In one way we think a great deal too much of the atomic bomb. “How are we to live in an atomic age?” I am tempted to reply: “Why, as you would have lived in the sixteenth century when the plague visited London almost every year, or as you would have lived in a Viking age when raiders from Scandinavia might land and cut your throat any night; or indeed, as you are already living in an age of cancer, an age of syphilis, an age of paralysis, an age of air raids, an age of railway accidents, an age of motor accidents.”
In other words, do not let us begin by exaggerating the novelty of our situation. Believe me, dear sir or madam, you and all whom you love were already sentenced to death before the atomic bomb was invented: and quite a high percentage of us were going to die in unpleasant ways. We had, indeed, one very great advantage over our ancestors—anesthetics; but we have that still. It is perfectly ridiculous to go about whimpering and drawing long faces because the scientists have added one more chance of painful and premature death to a world which already bristled with such chances and in which death itself was not a chance at all, but a certainty.
This is the first point to be made: and the first action to be taken is to pull ourselves together. If we are all going to be destroyed by an atomic bomb, let that bomb when it comes find us doing sensible and human things—praying, working, teaching, reading, listening to music, bathing the children, playing tennis, chatting to our friends over a pint and a game of darts—not huddled together like frightened sheep and thinking about bombs. They may break our bodies (a microbe can do that) but they need not dominate our minds.
I considered not sharing this, but there are some important points here. This is not a recommendation to ignore medical advice and current distancing recommendations - rather a plea to stay human, chin up, and look forward to life as normal very soon. There is more than one tragedy happening right now in the world, but there is only one we have our eye on at present. Fear and hesitation will cause more long term damage than the virus ever will.

If ATM workers are not "essential" in those areas where we're under lockdown, and if this crisis goes on for several months, we could see an abrupt end to physical money of all forms.
Many would welcome a cashless society.

We have a friend in Florida who went to the bank for cash and there was a physical shortage of currency. As for people not accepting coins back in change, I guess the currency could be just as contaminated. Never dreamed I'd be contemplating washing my money.
When I withdrew cash last week thru the drive through I saw the teller don gloves before counting out my cash.
Today I gave a 5$ bill for lottery tickets at the local convenience store. He promptly wiped it with Lysol. Can't use a credit card for tickets.

The poorest people do not want a cashless society. There are technologies that support most poor people, but not the poorest. Maybe we can change that, but that's the way it is now.

Not as long as people are begging for handouts. Poor people don't have bank accounts.

whatever you see happening now is only an illusion that will fade quickly once this passes from the Nation's memory which is, sadly, very short. at this time next year it will be as though it never took place, and unless I am woefully wrong we will have learned nothing from it. the fact that the general population is so alarmed by it and our leadership so inadequately prepared to react to it should speak volumes.
everyone should be familiar with the saying: Those who don't learn from history are bound to repeat it. another that I heard George Will use around 1988: People tend to get the Government they deserve.
have a nice day and stay safe at home.
The following is an interesting article regarding forgetting history. In this case, preparation was done, it was just cut due to budgets.

I love it when misinformation that leads folks to a wrong conclusion is CORRECTED. Our founders believed an informed citizen was best for the future of the Republic.
I've been having a PM chat for a few days with a fellow who is so uninformed he finally quit the conversation. I let him have the last word but I'm no longer interested enough to open it and read it. Previously, I told him about this but apparently it has not been reported widely. Trust me that it is often better to be uninformed and happy in your beliefs.
.......................and I need to go see my Barber that I visit every few days. she's an old "friend" from about 30 years ago. I always tell her that if the USN would have had Barbers like her I would have re-enlisted!!

And thus the spread.
Does anyone know someone infected that is in a hospital or who has died? Last week one member here reported that a friend's child was sick. Some idiot doctor has reported that as soon as all of us have been exposed and some die and most recover the virus will not have anyone to infect. It sounds like fake news.

This approach is called "herd immunity" and was seriously discussed in the UK for a while:
Stay in and don’t get it
Get it and come out the other end with antibodies
Or get it and die
Herd immunity requires a large percentage to have been exposed
Hopefully a preexposure inoculant or post exposure med to lessen duration will be ready in the relative near future. I think if you are dumb enough to not believe in the danger at this point you probably need to be helped out of the gene pool anyway

I didn't quit the PM conversation because "I was so uniformed". I quit because you're an arrogant, disingenuous [expletive deleted] with whom trying to have an honest conversation is a complete waste of time. And if anyone needs proof of that, you just gave it to them.

This approach is called "herd immunity" and was seriously discussed in the UK for a while:
There is a nice diagram on Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herd_immunity
Three options at this point
Stay in and don’t get it
Get it and come out the other end with antibodies
Or get it and die
Herd immunity requires a large percentage to have been exposed
