Any help figuring out what country this medal is from or what it is commemorating would be much appreciated

    "Three Heroic Human Bombs" Commemorative badge

    Obverse
    Three soldiers carrying a bomb to their target.
    Inscription: Chuukon (Loyal Spirit), Nikudan Sanyuushi (Three Heroic Human Bombs).

    The Nikudan Sanyuushi were three combat engineer soldiers from the Toyama Army Academy who volunteered to carry a bomb and detonate it to remove a wire obstacle during the Battle of Shanghai.
    Heroes: Takeji Eshita (Private 1st Class), Susumu Kitagawa (Private 1st Class), Inosuke Sakue (Private 1st Class).

    Reverse
    Inscription:
    Byoukouchin (area name near Shanghai where they died),
    Gokoku No Kami (Gods that Protect the Country),
    7.2.22. (February 22, 1932),
    Eshita, Kitagawa, Sakue (last names of soldiers).

    Yikes. The first kamikazes.

    During WWII allied soldiers used line charges to clear paths through minefields and barbed wire obstacles on the beaches, and placement was risky to say the least but there was some hope that the soldiers would survive.

    Imperial Japan brought new meaning to the term "suicide mission".
