There is an interesting coin in a NGC 4.0 slab.
Was that era considered undergraded?
Needs cracked and a dip before cross over attempt.

4th gen slabs are not very rare but they do usually carry a modest premium unless the coin is a complete dog. I have not found that generation to be from a tight grading standard as a rule but there are exceptions. If your paying a premium for the slab; and finding old fatties for a bargin is unusual; and the coin doesn't upgrade the chances are high that you will be in the red after all the costs to cross.

No, those coins were accurately graded. So were the NGC 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 ... etc.
The coins are accurately graded at the time. Grading guidelines change, so the better question is ... "are those coins considered undergraded by today's guidelines?"

For what it’s worth; I have seen some that were undergraded during this era but certainly not all.

Well... I was looking at one and then another popped up on the radar.
Might be a nice Franklin variety hidden under the unattractive toning.
For $30 it was cheap enough to gamble on a big score.
Worst case, it will make good candidate for learning to dip.

I’ve seen similar questions about the grading (in general) pertaining to other types of holders, as well. And it never makes sense to me. What counts is the coin in question, not the holder it’s in or the perception of the overall grading at the time the coin was graded and encapsulated.
