Toned Peace

For those of us that enjoy toned Peace dollars, this eBay auction recently ended with a flurry of bids. I do not know enough to link the site so I will show a
screen shot instead.

I have been watching this auction. I am not sure what to make of it. The seller is a known seller of coins with questionable color. The fact one side is toned and the other is not raises my eyebrow towards real, though, as I am not sure how one would gas the slab in a manner that only creates toning on one side.

My interpretation was that the contrast was jacked-up just a biiiiiiiiiit too much!

Damn, juicing was bad in sports and it's also bad in toned coin images. After looking at enough of them, you can spot the juicing.

  • airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,386 ✭✭✭✭✭

My immediate thought was the photo was juiced. Might still be a nice coin, but I wouldn’t touch it at that price, not expect it to look like the photo.

I messaged the seller and he relayed that information back.

I'm in the juiced-up images camp (contrast, vibrance, saturation)

  • fivecentsfivecents Posts: 11,207 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm in the "it's real toning camp".

Peace dollars don't tone like Morgan dollars. The whole series of peace dollars (bearly) even tone.

Heard it had to do with the US mints lubing the peace dollar dies with bear grease.

Toned Peace Dollars a fairly recent thing so I wonder....

Didn’t that seller get banned from posting here? Or someone with a similar name.

Yes - he was banned during the Disagree wars.

Define recent? I've been collecting them for 15 years myself. And I know I wasnt the first.

Coin is beautiful but that price is nuts.

It's kind of cool. I'd buy it for $50 or $60.

It's back up again from the same seller in a new auction. I don't know what happened to the previous auction.

The coin seems from the pics to be much better than MS64. Perhaps it was net graded because the toning is questionable.

I consider true views juiced / artistic liberty in post editing as well but the kool aid is strong and true views get respect.

It was briefly relisted but then taken down (potentially an accident).

I question the toning too. How is it that a target toning pattern can form on the obverse and absolutely nothing on the reverse???

I'm not sure either way. But it is beautiful if NT. Do you also question the millions of toned morgans that tone on 1 side?

  • jerseycat101jerseycat101 Posts: 1,360 ✭✭✭✭✭

I don't like the toning at all.

I collect toned Morgans. Many toned on one side from bag toning. I just don't understand how a coin can target tone on one side and not the other. Target toning is from albums and envelopes. One would expect both sides to tone. That is what I question. How the one side would tone like this and not the other. Maybe from a coin cabinet? Color progression looks appropriate on this Peace dollar.

I always thought to believe when one side is toned and the other side not. Was a TRUE sign of the coin NT. Meaning, when cooked, usually both sides turn colors? 🤔

Chemical distributions can vary in small spaces on something like an album or an envelope. The old PCI slabs are a great example of one way a single side can tone while the back doesnt. Those PCI holders made some target tones, Ive seen it happen first hand on a coin I knew went from blast white in the slab to colorful.

What you thought is often not the case.
