Pogue collection continues to surprise

I saw an ad for the upcoming Pogue auction in March. The coin highlighted in the ad is an 1848-O Liberty Head Eagle PCGS 66 CAC. It is apparently the finest known New Orleans No Motto Eagle for any date. I knew Pogue collected early gold and followed all the earlier auctions. When I see this coin that seemingly did not "fit" in his collection (and some others coming for sale) my mind wonders----how did he decide on this coin, why did he get the coin, did he have goal in obtaining this coin beyond it being amazing or was it just a $300,000 "one off" to add to his collection, etc. He clearly loved coins and his collection continues to amaze.

Fits well in his collection, No Motto Eagles in Gem or better are extremely rare. Any No Motto Eagle in Choice Unc or better is a prize.
Was fascinated by the preview at the FUN show of some of his type collection to include high grade "moderns" that will be coming up for auction soon.
The 1848 O $10 and 1875 S $20 both trace their pedigree to the James Stack collection ( no relation to the Stacks Auction family).
More than likely both coins were acquired at the time of their issuance.
Mr. Pogue had a “Type Set” of US Copper, Silver, and Gold coins ( post 1839) that he was
building.
He also had a few amazing World coins as well.
He put together a Type Set, using Rare Dates in the finest grades available.
I’m impressed that he had moderns including a Kennedy half, Roosevelt dime and a few Lincoln wheat cents.
I had no idea about the type set---what an amazing collection on its own
