What's the dumbest thing you ever did with a coin as a kid?

  • When I was about 10, taking a $2 1/2 Lib to the bowling alley to see if it would register as a dime in the pay phone.

I don't remember if it registered or not, but I remember the feeling of panic as soon as it dropped. Luckily it came back in the coin return when I hung up.

Anyone ever use a cent in a fuse box in the days before circuit breakers? :o

Soaked Lincoln cents in Heinz catsup to make them "shiny". (I also laid cents on railroad tracks to flatten them).

Hmmm...I guess the stupidest thing I ever did broke a would be mentors heart when I was 13(He was a senior in HS that sometimes rode the same bus I did). He sold me a set of 17PDS T1 Standing Liberty quarters very cheap...and I do mean so cheap he might as well of given them to me. I have a somewhat photographic memory and I still see those 3 coins as a minimum of AU+ in my mind.

At that time during my collecting quantity trumped quality. We had a local flea market type venue that had a coin dealer. I traded those 3 for 20 or 25 Washington Quarters I needed that were likely only worth spot then...certainly now. :( This was when silver was around 2.5 times face.

Toned and crusty. Looks like a metal detector find on the beach.

When I was about 4 years old, I accidently swallowed a Mercury Dime in my sleep (this would have been about 1949). It hurt going down and told my Mom about it. She called the Doctor and he said to feed me several slices of bread and search (?) to make sure it had passed....it did! That is why I say collecting Mercury Dimes may not be in my blood, but one did go through my digestive system!
    Best wishes,

I spent the silver dollars my great uncle gave me. Hey, a buck was a lot of money in the 50s.

In high school we had an old janitor that was a real perv. He liked to shake hands with the male students and then slowly and firmly slide his hand across yours while letting go. He was constantly drinking water from the fountain in the cafeteria. This was back when the fountains had that little shield that covered where the water comes out with that useless secondary plate over the water hole that the stream would shoot through.

I finally got sick and tired of his antics and figured out that a nickel and a cent together would snugly fit between the water hole and plate. When he came to get a drink the water sprayed horizontally right on his crotch for a few seconds before he realized what was happening, so he had to walk around looking like he peed himself. I got him with this at least a dozen times.

How many here used Permabond to glue a quarter in the hallway at school? That always caused a traffic jam! :#

I used to krazy glue pennies over the keyhole to a classroom door when I didn't want to go to class.

When I was in the 7th grade I traded a US half cent for a corn beef sandwich with swiss cheese at a deli I would walk by everyday.
