stevek has been clamoring for some competition, so i have decided to honor that request. the rules for this particular contest could not be more simplistic:
1) you get one guess. if you edit, your entry is tossed.
2) first person to correctly name this thoroughbred wins $25 via PayPal
hint: winner of at least one triple crown race
i took the pictures, and i'll share the backstory after it's over. work may preclude me from ending this in a timely fashion, but i'll do my best to check in and scour for the winner. good luck!

Love the racehorses BTW. Spent a lot of time around the standardbreds.

Sports fans are all gluttons for punishment, every single one of them, no exceptions...only a question of degree.
BTW - I've done 2 or 3 contests over the years. One had a prize of $250 if I'm remembering right.
Maybe i'll start another one if I'm in the mood. i'll have to think about it.

For $250, a bunch of us would have been all over the net comparing images. This would have been solved a couple days ago.
earlier this summer i took my annual golf trip in the mountains of New Mexico. while there, i caught wind of a certain Kentucky Derby winner that ruled the roost nearby. so on my way home, i (along with some family members) made a slight detour and hit up the Double Eagle Ranch just outside of Roswell, NM. Mark Allen (a co-owner) was there and couldn't have been any nicer. in fact, he welcomed our presence with open arms. showed us around the digs, then allowed us to chillax with MINE THAT BIRD -- a very gregarious horse. as for the esteemed (asshole?) forum member who called him sorry, lest you forget he was 50-1 in the '09 KD and came from 8 lengths behind the entire field to win by almost 7. oops.
congrats goes out to BLUEJAYWAY. kindly shoot over your email addy linked to PayPal when you have time, sir. below i am including a few more pictures and the actual race from 10 years ago, which had arguably the worst call in the history of horse racing. (MTB was so far back the announcer almost failed to mention his name, then he didn't say it again until he almost crossed the finish line.)

It's a tough call for a track announcer with all those horses in the race. That being said, late in the race when there's not that many horses to call, there's no good excuse for a terribly late call on that horse closing on the rail.
Tom Durkin probably wasn't very pleased with himself after that call.
Googling wouldn't have worked on my contest. If i'm remembering right, it had to do with what day the Phillies would clinch the pennant or something like that.
But you're right about the higher dollar amount resulting in higher contest participation.

if I remember correctly the owner vanned the horse in his own trailer to the Derby.
He sure didn't look too sorry in that race. But against "Big Red'" he would have lost by 2+ seconds...roughly 12-13 lengths.
just want to let everyone know that BLUEJAYWAY is a good man. he didn't want the cash.......he wanted me to make a specific donation instead. now i know why i decided to do this.
