Do you ever envy the pocket change collector?

Not much silver and even less gold, but every coin is acquired at face (or less as coins can be found on the ground.)

Don't have to worry about slabs or stickers, price fluctuations or which dealer to name in your will for when you check out.

More importantly, the wife will never yell at you for hanging onto the couple of quarters in change from the Starbucks purchase (though you may get a lecture on the 1200 calories.) ;)

    I still cherry pick from circulation. In my forty plus years of collecting I have more rolled coins than most banks. Yeah, I'm a hoarder. And yes 99% of them aren't worth much over face value. Imagine if your grandfather did the same and willed you a roll of 1932 d and s Washington quarters? Or 1916d Mercury dimes. Someone's going to profit from 1% of my hoard.

    I think their collecting habits are more stress free than ours. They will outlive us.

    Everyday I see more and more the wisdom of this type of collecting style. I won't collect pocket change, but I only collect whatever allows me to touch and handle my collectable and that does not require a TPG.

    Not really- but I do miss the days when it worth checking pocket change for silver and wheat cents!

    Actually, to some extent, I still 'collect' from pocket change.... I check most of my change when I get it... but if I miss the chance (in a hurry etc.) I later put all my change on the dresser, and when the pile gets out of hand, I go through it. I have found wheaties and a couple of silver Rosies....one silver quarter. Lots of fun... Cheers, RickO

    I don't see why you can't collect in more than one way. Like by having a secret state quarters album pulled from circulation you don't tell your friends here about ;) .

    Sure, I envy the pocket change collector his lack of worry.

    Also envy the apartment renter his lack of worry about lawn care and roof repair.

    The beater car driver his lack of worry about bird chits and door dings.

    The single dateless guy his lack of women trouble and expense.

    Amd so on..

    No, I never have envied them at all. My interest went to the older coins as soon as I laid eyes on them when I was 11 years old.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    Truth is that an update of the CPG would not needed if not for some of the purest and dedicated collectors - roll searchers and change searchers. This is the trenches of new discoveries be they minor or major. It is where the coin is found, submitted and sold to fill some variety set. Dealers with exception of a few do not even deal in this arena because of the time allotted and I think those that do, get there material from the searchers rather than commit the time themselves. So yes, I am envious and appreciate their efforts.
