Post your Stack's/Bowers 2019 ANA Auction Wins

Well I only won one item from the Q. David Bowers reference collection and very happy as it's been one that I have been trying to fill a hole in my collection since I started. I've never even seen a viable filler since this last sold as this is a very tough variety with a line under Not One Cent which far exceeds the archaic Rarity-3 rating assigned. As a Rarity-3 this is only seen at times in VF grades and can command close to $200 with spirited bidding as such if not defaced or suffering from environmental damage. At issue free EF-AU $300-400 isn't out of the question these days as AU it's nearing a condition census. The example won below is the finest UNC I've seen since it last sold in the 2008 Dice & Hicks sale. During the 11 years since no other UNC example has surfaced. For comparison Eric Newman had a AU50 and John Ford a EF net graded with dents and the E in CENT on the reverse re-cut to a U.
1837 Abraham Riker, New York, HT-306 / Low-154, Rarity-3, Hard Times Token
Provenance: Virgil M. Brand, James E. Dice & M. Lamar Hicks, Stephen L. Tanenbaum.
Comments
Can I consider it a win that I got out bid?
All comments reflect the opinion of the author, evn when irrefutably accurate.
Only if you almost got auction fever and walked away saying golly gee whiz that was close.
so far with hope for next week.
(1835) Allaire Village, NJ HT-201A Howell Works Garden Overstruck on a 1820 Large Cent PCGS XF40

Very excited when I saw this token listed, as it is one of those pieces I've only read about and has a personal connection. Knowing that I could probably pull off only one purchase from this great sale, I made this my priority. Most of the details of the undertype are present, giving this piece a very dramatic appearance. Since it was struck on a large cent instead of the usual dished planchet, the reverse "TOKEN" is the strongest Ive ever seen. It is usually very weak in the center, often omitting the middle letters.
These tokens were used in the General Store of a mining town developed by James P. Allaire not 10 minutes from where I live in New Jersey. 200 years ago, it was in the middle of nowhere but way ahead of its time. A self contained community, it was occupied by around 400 residents from 1822-1846, who worked to pull bog iron ore from the ground to produce material goods. Today, you can still walk through this charming village, restored to its former glory, and get a taste of what life was like in the good old days.
It is listed as R9, but I do not believe another exists that is struck over a large cent.
I will do a formal write up in a couple of weeks when I have some time.

As some here know that I have been collection Spiel Marke , California gold rush era tokens.

I don’t collect the group of small “Model coins” but upon reading about them they are fairly rare and very expensive.
Well, browsing Stacks auction in the last parts of the sale I saw the actual coin box that held these small coins.
Come to find out the box itself is exceeding rare. So I tossed in a bid and won!

Impressive pickups @Broadstruck @keets @DCW @coinsarefun ! Love the 1949 Emigration to California token!
There were a lot of interesting things in this auction. Unfortunately the one I wanted the most seemed like it was withdrawn from auction before it went to sale, the silver Numismatic Knights of the Round Table medal.
I was the high bidder on a nice 1904 $20:

It appeared from the auction page leading up to live bidding that I had not met the reserve, however I did get an invoice. I suppose I'll find out what's really going on when I pay the invoice and see whether I receive the coin or not!
I probably over paid for this but I liked it hope the picture shows up first time posting a picture!

I've been looking for this for a long time.

Yes, scratched all to hell and back, but how can I pass up an R-5 double dime (even if it is a duplicate for me) for less than $100 all in? 1875-S BF-8

Darkside, but I will put it out there for beauty and rarity:
This coin is a VERY RARE currency example of the West African States 5,000 Francs struck in gold. Last seen was a different specimen just over 10 years ago, no other records available and Krause put up guessed values for this coin.
The larger silver coin of the same denomination is quite available, and if I may say, a beauty in it's own right.
Well, just Love coins, period.
Very nice piece.
How long were you waiting for this one?
My first Encased Postage Stamp.

Unfortunately the one I wanted the most seemed like it was withdrawn from auction before it went to sale, the silver Numismatic Knights of the Round Table medal.
I was watching that and also noticed it vanished, will we ever know why and who??
when I posted my Lexington Concord above I hinted about another item I was hoping for and I managed to win it, just sent payment for them both about an hour ago. like Tom Petty sang, the waiting is the hardest part.
Just won this one.

My only ANA purchase.

I'm always up for something scarce and unusual. Here are a couple of my pickups:
1909 Fireman Association Convention Lucky Cent Elongated 1907 Indian Cent. Dow-Unlisted. Elongates are a pretty thin market, but they've grown on me over the years so I threw a bid in on this one for the heck of it and ended up winning it.

Massachusetts--Boston. Undated (1870s) Reuter & Ally. Rulau Ma-Bo F95. Silvered Brass. 30 mm. I already have an example of this type (ex-JJF), but they are pretty scarce so why not get another?

Why is that labeled "Scratch" instead of "Graffiti" I wonder?
A lot of neat stuff has been posted!
I only had my eye on one other lot that wasn't in the Hard Times Token portion of the auction a tough 1850's southern Merchant token described by Stack's Bowers as "Rare and Unusual". A 29mm diameter brass obverse uni-face reverse striking of Taylor & Raymond "Gentlemans Furnishing Store" Louisville, Kentucky. This obverse die was used by J.T. Levick circa 1860 on mules to create rarities within the Merchant token series. I like the eagle design since it reminds me of the Beaky Buzzard in the Bugs Bunny Looney Tunes.
Nice piece. Is "J.T. Levick" here the Joseph Napoleon Tricot Levick described in these links?
@Zoins yes the same J.N.T. Levick.
@keets - spectacular Columbus medal! Any more details about it?
My current "Box of 20"
more to know when it arrives next week. what I know now is what the pictures show and that it is "lacquered" from the Stack's description. I expect it to be a little bit darker, they probably flooded it with light for the pictures.
This was a great pick up and a rare opportunity. Let us know how it looks in hand!

Wow! Congrats to you!!
I missed that bronze medal in the sale! It would have gone nicely with the silver one I have!
Yeah, me too! I just got a notice that my package had just been accepted at the post office in Anaheim at 4:18pm today!!
Mine will be here Wednesday about the time I'm blowing more money in the next Stacks auction.
Gracias Cardinal. That means a lot from you. If you have a pic and feel like sharing, I would love to see it.
Dang is that an electrotype? I totally missed this

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Well, it hasn't been delivered as yet, so I'll have to come to my own decisions when it comes in. In any case, it is not encapsulated at this time.
I love this. Don’t see this everyday

Here's one group shot. More to follow.

They are all toned except the aluminum, Morgan overstrike and the 1938 dime stretched.
Morgan has a bit on toning on the rims
