Coins from around Jesus' time?

mouschimouschi Posts: 695 ✭✭✭✭

I've been semi curious of coins in this time period. Are there any out there that are reasonably affordable? What do you all suggest?

    Widow's mite.

The Tiberius denarius is often called the “tribute penny” (Render unto Caesar...). In any case, it circulated very widely across the Roman Empire, very definition in the Holy Land, and is readily available today.

Did you post on the World & Ancient Forum?

Widow's Mite has always been a popular choice. Common and inexpensive in most lower grades.

The shekel of Tyre is also a popular Bible collectable as it's believed to be one of the 30 pieces of silver use to pay Judas for betraying Jesus.

Seems like some good answers. I have no other suggestions.

But a word of advice: A quick perusal of Google with those search terms, in the past, led me to what seemed like a lot of marketing for overpriced coins. Why? Well, I assume there are many "non coin" people who look for this type of thing.

    This is an excellent point.

There are a lot of fancy packaged "Bible Coins" sold to the public. Now, some of these are actually awesome for non-coin people because they have all kinds of info on the packaging that a coin wouldn't. But if you just want "The Coin", they can be bought more cheaply raw from a reputable source.

Assuming you meant Jesus Christ and not "Jesus" from south of the border, the Widow's Mite is the most accessible coin.

As ThisIsTheShow said (I was going to abbreviate and use his initials but then reconsidered :o ), you will find tons of options and some will be marked up a bit for fancy packaging. But even some of those won't be too expensive. I have a couple Widow's Mites that I picked up and I don't think l paid more than several dollars each.

To put it another way, there are lots of options for coins of that era, but I would start with the mite.

And it's my understanding He threw the coins away. Now then if you got a good White's metal detector and air fare........

Many of the bronze coins of this period are very inexpensive! I've paid less than $15 for very attractive pieces I gave as gifts for Christmas. A simple internet search such as "Coins of the Bible" will answer all of your questions about types, history, and prices.

Does a collector starting out need to be aware of the duplicates that are out there? Buy certified only? Looks like such coins are in NGC's camp searching ebay.
On a side note, interesting grading notation on slab, Strike 5/5, Surface 5/5.
