Hypothetical Unopened Wax Question

If you had a choice of buying the following unopened wax boxes and holding them for the future, which of these options has the highest ceiling and opportunity for gain?

I believe these options are all in a somewhat similar price range give or take a few bucks. How would the experts rank these products taking into key rookie cards, HOF'ers, production run, etc?

1982 Topps Baseball
1983 Topps Baseball
1985 Topps Football
1989 Score Football

    83 Topps due to card design and big 3 rookie crop.


    Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

    I think eventually more will realize how undervalued the early 80s Topps FB unopened is (especially w/85 black borders). 83T BB second for the reason grote mentioned.

    85T FB is very popular and I believe the black border will push high grade cards much higher (which usually leads to an increased in unopened). 83 is definitely the best BB choice listed.

    I agree with both of these gentlemen. 80's Topps FB is the best value in unopened from the time period. 83TBB has three strong RCs vs. one in 82TBB. 89 Score FB has one of the best classes ever but is already priced high given it's production numbers.

    I like the 1985 Topps FB, but the rookie crop is weak with the top guys being Warren Moon and Dent. That will always limit how much the box will appreciate.

    I would buy the 1989 Score FB Box. Last check there are 10 HOF RCs plus a bunch of solid second tier Pro Bowl types RCs - Keith Jackson, Rypien, John Taylor, Hardy Nickerson, Chris Spielman, etc.

    There is a reason why they go for over a $1000, your chances of pulling them are very small.

    Prices for 1985 haven't moved that much despite the values of the PSA 10 Payton and Elway. Maybe a sealed rack case would pull in premium bucks, but I don't see wax moving that much from the current levels.

    I agree with Tim, 1983 Topps Baseball is a great issue with 3 possible hits. Everyone goes home happy.

    Thought I would resurrect an old thread and get people’s thoughts on what looks best at this point in time. Prices have obviously moved up appreciably since this thread was started.

    I just can’t see 85 Topps baseball in the same neighborhood as 82 and 83. Especially the latter. Thoughts?

    83 Topps baseball for previously mentioned big 3 rookies with 85 not far behind. 85 has the US Olympic Team subset which is extremely popular along with some big rookies like Puckett... and more

    83 Topps Baseball for the obvious reason that it garners the big three rookies. But for another reason that it contains rookie cards of Frank Viola and Gary Gaetti. Both did pretty well in the majors, and they will forever be tattooed on my memory for the '87 World Series. That whole team was magical.

    I may be alone on this, but I think that the 82 baseball is overpriced compared to the 83 baseball. As mentioned before, 83 has the big 3 (plus Ripken's second year and first regular solo card), while 82 only has Ripken. I think given regular odds, the fact that in an average box you should pull 2/3 of the big cards in 83 baseball, but might not get even one of the Ripkens means that 83 is clearly the better buy. Additionally, there are lots of pretty fanatic Sandburg/Cubs fans out there which helps the 83.

    I'm with ya, Kevin. I'm not a big fan of 1982. And I'm not a big fan of the Ripken rookie in that set. It's never appealed to me. The '83 set, on the other hand, has so much going for it. There are some cards, though, that I really really dig in the '82 set: Rickey Henderson, Nolan Ryan, and, believe it or not, Mookie Wilson, to name a few.

    1982 Topps in my eyes is hands down the ugliest Topps baseball issue of the 1980’s.

    While I’m on that thought, 1979 Topps in my eyes is the ugliest Topps baseball issue of the 1970’s.

    I'd say 85T FB for same reasons mentioned above. Great looking set of cards.

    Funny how opinions can be so different... 1982 Topps is the only Topps set from 1981-1989 I like.

    1985 Topps Football, the black borders are tough to find in MINT condition or better, plus a much smaller print run than baseball.

    I quit collecting after 82, so don't have an opinion on 80's, except I wish 81 was more appreciated. re 82: I probably opened 10-15 boxes of 82 looking for the Bob Denier, Steve Sax and Kent Hrbek.....and of course Cal, but think the other 3 cards were hotter earlier in the year.

    I think I mainly like 79 because it's my birth year. I decided to start my run of complete sets there. It's definitely not my favorite design.
