Will the Dodgers Fail to Win the WS Again?

ElvisPElvisP Posts: 1,052 ✭✭✭

They currently have the best record in baseball, have generally played well all season but can they win the World Series? They have all but locked up a playoff bid and it's not even August. As a long time Dodgers fan, to me they have one glaring weakness that I have heard no one mention. Anyone care to guess what this weakness is?

    1. Inability to hit left handed pitching.
    2. Decision making of Dave Roberts.
    3. Clayton Chokeshaw.
    4. No tailgating allowed at Dodgers Stadium. If you can't bbq and have a beer with your friends in the lot before the game then you don't really deserve to win.

Besides the above IMHO they really need a catcher in the worst way. Barnes is currently hitting .196 and Martin is at .220 and heading fast to below .200. Both are not good defensively either. They brought up a rookie in Smith that showed a lot of promise. He hit 3 HR's in 26 at bats. Barnes and Martin have hit 7 all year in 400 at bats. I think Smith is now back in the minors for some reason aka Dave Roberts. I also saw Smith throw out 2 baserunners stealing while I haven't seen Barnes and Martin throw anyone out all year. One other big thing is Kenley Jansen is struggling in the the closer role.

Technically, they do not have the best record in baseball.

    1. Dodgers team batting average vs lefties is .256 which is better than Houston, Minnesota, Yankees, Braves, Cubs & another 12 teams, so inability to hit lefties = NOT TRUE
    2. 2016 manager of the year, better than a .600 win percentage, must be doing something right so your opinion of him = NOT TRUE
    3. Future HOFer Clayton Kershaw has won 9 post season games. In the post season he was over used because of lack of depth & in most of his losses he pitched well for about 6 innings & than was hit hard. Nothing to do with choking so your sarcastic comment = NOT TRUE
    4. In order to tailgate with your friends you need to "have friends", so the next time you want to be cute with the pen, try to be at least a little bit factual.

Good luck with the Three-peat. At least Roberts probably wont have another chance to lift Hill early.

I am a Dodgers fan, but they still have to get there first before they can win (or lose) it.

I collect Steve Garvey, Dodgers and signed cards. Collector since 1978.

Another 0'fer from the catching position tonight. Martin went 0-4 and now down to .217.

To me, the Dodgers' glaring weakness is that they have no real closer. Kenley Jansen is a joke!

I can't believe Dave Roberts continues to give him the ball at the end of games; especially after Jansen lied to him, I think it was in Philadelphia a week or so ago, when he took a batted ball of his foot, and told Roberts he was good to go, when he actually wasn't.

For me, if I was Roberts, Jansen would never get the ball again after that.

I would love to see Dodgers vs. Yankees (I'm a Yankees fan) but I don't think either team will make it past the first round of the playoffs.

The rookie catcher I mentioned actually got to play Saturday. He went 3-3 with a HR and drove in 6 runs. More than the Barnes/Martin combo has done the last month. Updated stats for Dodger catchers:
    Smith 10-29 .345 4 HR's 12 RBI's
    Martin 31-143 .217 2 HR's 9 RBI's
    Barnes 40-204 .196 5 HR's 23 RBI's

Jansen definitely is not pitching as well as in the past but for now, Roberts doesn't have a better option. The bullpen is their main weakness & hopefully they will address that before the deadline. The other problem is their defense, but that has only become a problem with the move of Peterson to 1st. But with all that, they are still the best in the NL & maybe all baseball. We will see.

The young catcher I was taking about was at it again today. He hit a 450 ft. 3-run homer in the top of the ninth to break a scoreless tie with the Rockies. Looks like the Dodgers have finally listened to me, lol. Dodgers lead is now 15.5 games and have baseball's best record. Only team with 70 wins(71).

His name is Will Smith and he is really helping out the bottom of the order. In the past, when the middle of the lineup would get on base, too often the bottom of the lineup would leave them stranded.

I wear that shirt in public in CA so no fear. Went to my first game at the Stick in the summer of 70 and have been a Giants fan ever since. Should be interesting to see how it all plays out. Best of luck to you.

Awwwwww! A Giants fan, no wonder you are so anti-dodger.

I have been to the stick a few times myself. I will never forget a July night & when that fog started coming over from I believe the third base side. It was like a wall of water& cold!!!!! Of course, I hate the Giants, but they have a great franchise. I will also never forget the days of Mays, Cepeda, McCovey & Marichal.

Let's say the Dodgers make it to the World Series this year and lose. Of course I would be disappointed, I grew up spoiled. I witnessed the Dodgers winning it all in 1955, 1959, 1963, 1965, 1981 & 1988 while playing in the series in 1956, 1966, 1974, 1977, 1978, 1981 and the last 2 years. That's 14 world series since 1956. They are also very competitive year after year, rarely finishing in the lower division including 7 consecutive division titles.
I guess what I am saying is "how do you look at the early 1990's Buffalo Bills?" Were they "losers" or were they a great team because they made it to 4 superbowls in a row? How many other teams can say they made it to 4 superbowls in a row?
Anyway, it's going to be a non-issue as the Dodgers will win it all this year & multiple future wins & be considered the team of the decade or century.

The Dodgers will not fail to win the World Series again. What happened last night is truly a shame. Even Don Mattingly suffered from the lack of a bullpen. “Wait till next year.”

    What goes around, comes around.

Not trying to to kick Dodger fans when they are down, but recall 1981 LCS between Dodgers and Expos (the predecessor to the Nationals). Rick Monday hits a game-winning HR against Steve Rogers, the Expos ace who also can out of the pen in the critical game. It looks like the tables were turned last night.

Dave Roberts. He’s not someone a neutral fan pulls for. I feel bad for LA players and fans, but not at all for him.

Nationals and Cardinals have no reliable pen, so it likes like whoever comes out of the ALCS should be the WS betting favorites.

There were bad moves)Roberts). How can you go to Kelly in the top of the 9th in a winner take all game. Luckily he got thru the ninth but to bring him back out in the 10th was inexcusable. Wth all that said the Dodgers just simply couldn't score. Getting a hit with RISP just never happened. One more run after the second inning last ngtht would have been enough. Man on second no outs and they fan 3 straight times. Dodgers struck out 65 times in 5 games. Playing rookies in front of David Freese(Mr. October) was another DA move from Roberts. Freese played one game and was 3-3. Plenty of no shows with the bat.
