Believe it or not...…I was torn between 45 and 50.

    Guess I went too conservative...

It's a really solid 50 and a splendid coin, in any case.

    Congratulations!!

    Happy for you!!

So I have a good question about CAC. If JA thinks the coin is a 53 or 55 will he Gold Bean it? Or does and AU have to be an MS etc? If it would gold Bean that's what I would do with it!

JA treats AU50 and AU53 as the same so he wouldn't give it a gold bean unless it was a 55 or better.

Really nice coin. If it is a 55....I would rather have it in a 55 holder than a rattler 50. Actually I would prefer it in a newer holder even if it was a 50 holder.

In my quest to do a US type set, a few key decisions had to be dealt with up front. Half dimse? Each sub-type of Seated? Early gold? Early copper? Small eagle quarter & half dollar? Major designs or minor varieties?

I basically settled on a business-strike, major design type set, knowing full well that a few of the holes would forever be empty. No big deal. Still, early US gold simply can't be ignored and many of these are among our most beautiful coins.

For me, the grand-daddy of them all has always been the relatively enormous (in diameter) early eagle. I know that it's actually one of the easier early gold pieces to acquire, but its visual presence commands attention. The small eagle design is preferable, but will probably be forever outside of my budget. Heraldic will have to do.

While filling up the war chest, I've been oogling these for several years in dealer's cases and watching them at auction. I've discussed them with several dealers including Doug Winter. Very early on, it was obvious that most of these have had help at some point during their 200+ year existence. Those stripped of their surfaces didn't do much for me and believe me, I was offered plenty!

Eventually, this one decided to come live with me. It's been a while since I've enjoyed acquiring a coin so much.

    Here it is:

I wouldn't. The rattler shows stability which is important with all of the rampant coin doctoring.

Congratulations, early $10 eagles are impressive. I have a couple of early $5's, hope to get a $10 someday.

This is not widely known, but some heraldic eagle reverse master dies and hubs (not working dies) were used for both $10's and half dollars. They were the same diameter.
