Finally achieved Top Rated Seller on Ebay

So this was a long time coming for me.... I was held back by the inability to sell individual silver dimes or quarters and include tracking. Once I figured that out I am now a top rated seller!!!

Congratulations.
Shouldn't this be in the BST?
Also, you are publicly advertising intent to violate ebay policies.

It's not against ebay policy to sell elsewhere. The violation occurs when you communicate to do so using ebay's messaging system.

Way to go. Congratulations. 🎉

Tighten up!
Don’t worry, I’ll still take a look...
Not true. It mentions contacting the seller, not contacting through eBay messaging:

how did you add individual tracking for low priced coins?
And what does achieving that status get you, exactly? Anyway, congratulations.
Kind regards,
George
Used to be a 20% fvf discount and worth the effort, at 10% now, it is of little value.
I started selling them as groups of 5 coins, so the unc roosevelts would be like 20 bucks for 5

very little. It gives you a Top Rated shield on your listings, which I believe the theory is "you are dealing with an experienced seller" and you save 10% on final value fees, which is 1%. The reason I felt it was reasonable to attempt to achieve, is that EBay forces the return policy anyway and the handling time does not bother me. Might as well save another 1%

I believe you are misreading the policy. It says for transactions THAT START OUT on EBay. if you contact me thru ebay and I say hey lets do this outside of ebay, then yes that is against policy. It is not wrong to post a link to my ebay page and say buy my stuff listed on ebay via contact through list serve.

I sell a lot of coins valued under $50, and the potential fee discount doesn't come close to what I can save by not using tracking, so I quit trying to qualify for Top Rated seller status- its $3 for tracking vs. 70 cents without for a one ounce shipment. I don't see that it has affected my sales at all.
Sell in lots (groups).
Congrats @davids5104!
If you have a store (mine is $27.95 a month) then your FVF is 6.15% on coins. So this would save you 0.615% to be a Top-Rated Seller? That's 31 cents on a $50 coin. Hmmm.
And for that you have to offer free returns, ship the next day even if it takes 5 days for a slumbering bidder to cough up the money and each night at sunset, bow obsequiously in the direction of Ebay headquarters.
And, with eBay ultra-low fees, you can make a profit IF and only IF, You Coinstartled want to Work for it. Do you want to Work for it, or just Complain?
Sorry, but I call BS.
If someone looks at your items on eBay, the transaction STARTED on eBay. While it is nearly impossible for eBay to police, what they are trying to prevent is you using their server space and their eyeballs and not paying for the privilege.
If you are so sure, give me permission to contact eBay and tell them that you offered a 10% discount on eBay listed items for people that contacted you directly and see what they say.

Directly from eBay (emphasis added by me):
"Buyers and sellers aren't allowed to share or request direct contact information prior to completing a sale. They also can't use information they've obtained on eBay to contact each other to buy or sell off eBay. Sellers who listed an item on eBay must pay all fees for the eBay services they've used, even if the sale is completed off eBay (such as cash on delivery, pay on pickup, or paid by check or money order)."

C'mon, EOC. It wouldn't be an Ebay thread if you, me and the professor didn't muddy it up.
Also directly from eBay:
"Sellers are also liable for final value fees if they offer or reference their contact information, or ask for a buyer's contact information, in the context of buying or selling outside of eBay, even if the item does not sell."

Not allowed
Some examples of activities that aren't allowed include:
Using member contact information obtained from eBay or using any eBay system to offer to sell any listed item outside of eBay
Posting or displaying contact information in a listing, including email, phone number, and mailing address, without the permission of eBay or except as required by law
Canceling a listing to sell to a buyer who found the item on eBay

Hmmm, I tried that and discovered just how many dishonest people there are out there.
All of my coins that are on eBay are also on my own personal website that I pay to have hosted.
Also, I show some of the coins in public forums as a way to "advertise" them.
I never make a transaction outside of ebay using eBay's messaging system.
No worries be
My FINAL word on the subject:
It happens all the time. eBay has a hard time policing it or enforcing it. I really don't care what you do. But let's not pretend that it isn't against eBay policy, no matter what you may think of that particular policy.

The letter if not the intent.
And just how many major dealers in the country do exactly just that? I could probably name at least a dozen off the top of my head.
I don't care what anyone does. Listing in multiple locations is fine, although eBay really wants any coin found on eBay to be bought on eBay. But that aside, that isn't what the OP was doing. The OP originally told us to go to his eBay listings and contact him directly if we want a 10% discount. THAT is DEFINITELY a violation of eBay policy. [Whether you like the policy, think the policy is legal or enforceable is quite beside the point.]

That is the second "final word"
As I said in my other post, it happens all the time and is impossible for eBay to police. But it IS against policy especially the way the OP did it. He edited his original post. But his original post specifically told us to go look at his eBay page and contact directly for a 10% discount. That is DEFINITELY against policy - no matter what you think of the policy.

LOL. You' think EOC would want eBay to get its cut of the action.

And before anyone gets up in my grill on this, I simply suggested the OP not advertise his willful violation of the eBay policy. I didn't report him to eBay or anything else. Just friendly advice.

Ebay gets exactly what I owe them.
My sales off of eBay are a direct result of MY hard work.
I do pay ebay more every month than I have ever paid any corporation, month after month, increasing all the time as my sales increase.
I am on your side on this. Even in the days of easy communication, I found the practice of going around Ebay pretty wretched. i complain and disagree with the escalated fees, but it is their operation and they are entitle to be compensated for their service.
Never liked the practice of going around Paypal either with the F&F option on coin sales.
Sounds like you are trying to convince yourself of something.
this post devolved into something that was not intended.

True.
The OP mentions contacting him through forum PM, not through Ebay messaging. If you were correct, then every item that a major dealer such as AMPEX sells through their own website that is also listed on ebay makes that dealer liable for ebay fees even when the item sells on their website. Again, the violation occurs when a seller contacts "another ebay member" to do the deal off ebay. The only form of contacting each other under ebay's domain and control is the ebay messaging system. Discussion/sales outside of that system do not fall under ebay's "laws." The fact that large dealers such as APMEX list the same product on both ebay and their own website validates the argument.
Ebay's "Offers to buy or sell outside of Ebay" that you linked:
"When a transaction that started out on eBay is completed outside of the eBay platform, the buyer and seller are no longer covered by eBay protection programs and the eBay Money Back Guarantee. As such, contacting another eBay member to discuss moving a purchase off eBay creates a risk of fraud, and is not permitted. Please see our full policy guidelines below for more details.

What's new?
again, when done using the ebay messaging system. You're over reading their policy. Of course they want you to think their rules apply to communication outside of ebay, but note that they do not directly claim that.
A transaction does not start on ebay until a bid is made or a potential buyer communicates with the seller using the ebay messaging system. Until then it is a listing, not a transaction:
"When a transaction that started out on eBay is completed outside of the eBay platform, the buyer and seller are no longer covered by eBay protection programs and the eBay Money Back Guarantee. As such, contacting another eBay member to discuss moving a purchase off eBay creates a risk of fraud, and is not permitted. Please see our full policy guidelines below for more details."

Try as we will, our costs for fees to do the work, are still the cost of doing business.
To be a power seller, a top rated seller, etc., still takes time and effort. Kudos to you, too.
I'm in that camp, for many moons. I don't sell outside of ebay, except where I work ...outside of ebay.
