Is there any way to tell the normal version from the large version of these cards without seeing them up close? Basically, is there anything written on them to be able to tell them apart?

There is nothing written on them that differentiates between the sizes. You will not notice a visual difference in proportion/ratio either. The only way to know is to ask the seller to provide a very accurate measurement (not approximate). Also, I've seen several PSA labels with the incorrect size noted on the flip, so when viewing graded items, make sure the flip and the look of the card in the holder agree with each other.

There's a couple cards I can identify from raw scans w/85+% probability where one version is frequently MC or very close and the other isn't, but Joe Louis isn't one. Generally @miwlvrn's method is the only way to be sure (or a scan right next to a standard size card). If it's already slabbed, I and I'm sure others could verify for you which version it is, regardless of what the flip says.

If it measures 3 1/4 × 2 3/8 what version would it be?
That's closest to a Large, though more accurately 3 5/16" x a hair shy of 2 3/8"
ETA: Small is just shy of 3" x just over 2 1/8"

Does this look like the large or small version? I passed it up last month because I was looking for the large version.
By counting the rings in the oak, I've determined it was a 47 year old tree cut down in 2009 somewhere near Nova Scotia. That makes the pointer finger a ring size of 12, so it has to be a Large.
ETA: Maybe next time your wife gets the Jimmy elbows, you could pry this one away from me ...
I might just have to punch myself in the ribs, and tell her she did it in her sleep!
So, the one I passed up is a large?
There's no way to be certain without measurements, but it's either a tiny, chubby hand or it was a Large.
Ok, I wasn't sure, and didn't want to risk it.
