Can you request to cross a NGC + coin to cross only at the same + grade at PCGS?

I have several 67+ NGC coins that I would like to cross at or above 67+ can you designate this somehow on the submission sheet? I don’t think you can but don’t really want to go down a half grade.

I assume that would be the pass a same grade request, which is leaving that box empty.

Yes, you can say "current" as the minimum grade and that includes pluses.

Remember that PCGS exercises caution, with crosses. Graders have to look through plastic that can obscure surfaces, and holders that can hide problems behind gaskets and prongs. There is no going back, once a decision to cross is made. Hidden surprises revealed after cracking become PCGS's problem...a situation they strongly dislike.

So, generally, PCGS will be conservative.

I've gotten best results for the series I collect by crossing at "any" grade, just to get the coin into PCGS plastic. If I feel the coin deserves better and the money is worth it I'll send it back for a regrade where it is cracked and viewed raw, and PCGS's guarantee is in play so I'm not worried about a lower grade or worse.

    From the PCGS website:
    https://www.pcgs.com/crossover

So, you DO have a significant amount of control over what PCGS will, or won't, do when you submit for crossover. Consider carefully what is or isn't acceptable to you, and specify accordingly.

I agree with Lance, but write separately to emphasize that I believe PCGS is very inconsistent with the plus designation. You would probably be better to lose the half a point (if necessary) and regrade later to aim for the upgrade. On another note, NGC seems to have angered a lot of its registry users when it stop accepting PCGS coins. Are there even that many registry collectors for the coins that you're holding out on for fear of downgrading them? If not, the plus might not really help it as much as you might think.

Make sure you specify that is it a cross over as opposed to a regrade. I feel an NGC + coin crossed to a PCGS same grade no plus is better as my experience has been that PCGS slabbed coins command a premium most of the time over same grade NGC coins.

In the end its the coin but not the holder but the market is what it is for any given coin in an arms length transaction.

Ever notice that most dealers send bulk shipments of coins to NGC as opposed to PCGS? It is because they feel the will get a slightly better grade on most and can sell their inventory for a higher price.

I don't buy tv sold coins but watch the guys that are unloading the generic coins and you will see they have most of their coins in an NGC holder.

It’s great that PCGS provides a guarantee when grades get reduced, but while I’ve never used that, you can still lose money, as the amount you paid for the coin in its higher grade is not used, but the value a dealer would have to pay to replace the coin in that higher grade is how PCGS defines Market Value. As such, you might have a need to worry about some loss if a coin sent in for a regrade comes back in a lower grade.

PCGS's guarantee rarely makes the collector whole. Agreed. I have submitted more than a handful over the years (under their grade guarantee) and never got back what I paid.

Fortunately, regrading rarely involves downgrading. I'm sure someone has a story about it but it's never happened to me or anyone else I know.

I will be calling Customer Service tomorrow - for the third time on two simple questions. Had to email photos of the slabs. That was a month ago with a follow up.

    Maybe someone here can answer.
How do I fill out the form for PCGS to correct an error on their part? They slabbed an 1807 Capped Bust half but labeled it as a Draped Bust..
Can I ask for a pedigree on an NGC coin (Jules Reiver) to be maintained when I cross it to PCGS? How to fill out the form?

You can request anything you want...you may not get what you requested though. I would contact customer service.

@Cameonut - I email PCGS customer service to get slab certs fixed. PCGS replies with submission form and shipping instructions, including a postage-paid shipping label.

There's a little back and forth. They want slab photos. No problem. It usually takes at least several days for their reply that says "Good to go. Here are submission and shipping instructions". The turn-around time is pretty good. Usually around two weeks.

It helps to know someone in customer service and write directly to him/her. Replies from email to the general CS email address are very spotty. Here are two contacts I used several weeks ago:

I would not take a downgrade on something like that. However I would be curious what the differential if any is between the blue sheet bids on both in addition to TPG MV impact.
