A pretty cool reverse Morgan toner

ElmerFusterpuckElmerFusterpuck Posts: 4,805 ✭✭✭✭✭

I usually don't go after reverse toners that often, but this one really caught my eye. I got this coin sometime back, that "monster" thread inspired me to post this one. It's graded MS-63, the cool outlines around the toning pattern are a plus too. I don't see this date (1898-O) toned as much as some of the other dates.

Pretty sweet, that is one of the best band toned morgans that I have seen.

Nice, the finer bands of color in the middle are cool, especially on the wings.

That's the best color I've ever seen on a reverse stripe tab toner, hands down.. And I've owned quite a few. Have a about a dozen in inventory right now. Here's a few. I love em...

Very nice! If I had only seen the reverse, I would have guessed that it was an 1883-1885 coin. You don't see many toners like this for later dates. The Mint switched from coal to natural gas around the turn of the century, and there were also improvements in storage that resulted in drier storage conditions meaning fewer rotting canvas bags. All of this helped to reduce the number of bag toners.

What were the coins stored in that had the tabs? TIA

Before plastic album slides some albums had cardboard strips at the back to prevent the coins from popping through the holes when inserted. They protected that strip area where it was pressing against the coin from the air / gasses while exposing the surrounding fields to outgassing from the cardboard.

When you see an obverse one, it means the coin was inserted reverse up. Sometimes there was a hole specifically to show the reverse, sometimes a coin was accidentally put in the hole wrong. Either way, obverse stripe tab toners are much more comparatively rare than reverse ones. I have an obverse one at PC right now. If I can find a pic of her I'll post it.
