I'm going to end this argument. Someone send me $101 and I'll send them a box of 1987 Topps wax. Then the answer to the op will be....TODAY!

Tempting, but I think I'd rather send @doubledragon $300 for his left thumb.

Sometimes I need a ROTFLMFAO button instead of the pedestrian LOL.

    Forget 1987 Topps - when is 1988 Donruss hitting $100 a box? :)

1988 Donruss should already be at $100 because of the chase to find that 2nd PSA 10 of Devon White.

Scientists were recently debating this but all agreed that it would be a close race between '88 Donruss hitting $100 per box or the sun dying, both of which they estimate to be at about 5 billion years from now.

Fair question, and I'd have to agree with you that it most likely will happen. Set registry collectors are responsible for driving up the prices of 83, 84, 85 and 86 boxes.....I assume there are a handful of poor souls who are doing the same thing for the 87 set.

  • NJ80sBBCNJ80sBBC Posts: 830 ✭✭✭✭

That’s interesting, I had not heard or even considered that set registry was driving the explosion we are seeing in 80s unopened! I had just assumed that we had a wave of unopened collectors enter the market and people like me hoarding more of the stuff.

While I guess I should be happy for what I have got in my collection, I missed out on some big deals. I fully blame Aaron Judges 2017 season on splintering my focus from 80s unopened to modern.

My guess is about the same time Starbucks coffee is $75 per cup due to inflation. If I had to guess a year, I would say somewhere in the 2090-2100 range

While I think the OP is being a little overzealous, I also think there are some here that are underestimating his sentiment. A year ago, a PSA 10 Bonds was a $33 card and now they're $50+. Yes, it's Bonds, but that type of increase on a card with that much supply in the market is pretty impressive. With an increased adoption of the Beckett rookie card rules I think we'll see more attention paid to the 1987 issues of players like Bonds, Bo, McGwire, Canseco, Clark, etc.

For the record, I'm putting my money where my mouth is and just bought 4 87 topps wax boxes.
Will hopefully buy many more in next 3 years as budget allows.

Sir, it will be a pleasure to revisit this thread in 3 years.

Happy three years! So last we visited this thread, we've had the greatest run-up of pricing in the hobby's history. Inflation is tracking at its highest point in 40 years. And, looking at eBay, you can still get a box of '87 for $30-$35.

Still a slog to go to reach $100. Talk to you in another three?

I mean if you're talking about BBCE FASC boxes they're consistently selling for $50-$60 shipped, but point taken. See you in another three years! lol

Dennis, prices are already going higher on the 86 product, especially FASC, it will go up on the 87 product as well, mark my words.

Your words have been marked. I’ll try to remember to bump this thread every 3-5 years to mark them again when it doesn’t happen.

Green Sneakers, right after the Chiefs traded Alex Smith, after having recorded the best QB rating in the entire
NFL, I wrote what is currently in my sigline, about how Patrick Mahomes was the next great QB. And I started buying
all the Mahomes rookie cards I could afford. My words were marked in my sigline, but alas, how many read my
sigline but did not foresee what had become clear to me. :(
Sir, it will be a pleasure to revisit this thread in 3 years.

It's 3 years later... Even COVID and rampant inflation could not move those BBCE FASC boxes above $50-$60 shipped. Accounting for inflation the going rate is pretty much the same as they were in 2019 perhaps even a tad less.

As it turns out there were many, many , many good investments in Trading cards since May 2019 unopened 1987 Topps Baseball was simply not even close to being one of them.

@Darin , If you show up to eat a bit of crow in good nature, I for one will respect that.

@Darin, you’re a good dude for taking this one in the spirit of fun as it was intended.

But I’m telling you, another 3 years ain’t gonna help the cause getting ‘87 to $100.

I wonder if Green Sneakers would have spent all 3 years marking the calendar and waiting to pounce back into this thread if Darin's prognostication had come to fruition?

At least now he can throw away that little reminder piece of paper that he taped to his computer monitor 3 years ago. :D:D

In the last 3 years we have had near historic inflation + A COVID driven Trading Card (and Collectible) All-Time high bubble. If that could not boost the going rate of those boxes above $100 even if BBCE FASC then nothing would have since 2019.

BTW a buddy of mine owned a Comic Book shop in the 90's and 00's. I visited him him last night and posed the 1987 Tops baseball question. He still has 5 cases of the 6 he purchased circa 1995. I do wonder if overall there are hundreds of thousands of these cases still unopened...?

Full disclosure- Since I started this thread 3 years ago, I will say I no longer collect unopened
except for a few items I didn't sell to Phil from BBCE a couple months ago.
I did keep the 4 boxes of 87 topps I mentioned in a post along with a little 82 and 83 bb unopened.
The best boxes I had that I sold to BBCE were Mahomes rookie boxes, 2017 panini prizm.

Well it’s been 7 years since I started this thread and I see the lowest BIN prices for 87 topps fasc are $120 on eBay. It’s hard to find an accurate price for non fasc but bbce wrapped because bbce never has any listed on their website.
So I would say my timeframe of 3 years going over $100 was a little optimistic but a lot closer than those of you who guessed the year 2500 etc.

I’m saying right now fasc is over $100 on avg. and non fasc but bbce wrapped $65-75. Is that accurate?

  • craig44craig44 Posts: 12,824 ✭✭✭✭✭

it is absolutely surreal to me that 87 topps is at $100 a box. I never dreamed i would see the day...

Incredible. Only about 8 cards are worth more than $100 in PSA 10. None are close in PSA 9.

I think it's neat that now BBCE is cheaper than eBay.

  • ndleondleo Posts: 4,243 ✭✭✭✭✭

I see a lot of interest in junk era boxes where you can pull stars like Barry Bonds and other star RCs. 1989 Pro Set FB Series 2 , especially FASC boxes, seem to be rising in value. I also think 1989-1992 Junk Era basketball may start climbing since they are the one of the few lower cost ways to pull a Michael Jordan card from a pack. The BKB stuff with Jordan from 1986-1988 and 1996-2000 have already spiked.

Wow - nice to see these prices on '87 Topps Wax! At the time there were quite a few RC's to chase (even if they were included in the '86TT Set). The one thing I remember most about those cases -- they were the HEAVIEST cases to load/unload for shows.

I still like to see some of the forgotten rookies of 87 like ruben sierra and mike greenwell. for some reason, even all these years later when i am sorting through cards, i still feel like i should sleeve those ones up because they are "good" rookies!!

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

Interestingly...according to Google/gpt, there is only one rookie card in 1987 Topps that is in the hall of fame....Barry Larkin.

wow -- I would not have guessed only 1. I had to look up Greg Maddux and he was in the Trade set, so not him.
One of the cards I would put aside from the 1987 Topps cards was Cory Snyder (he was also in that 85T USA Team Subset). I was watching a movie on one of the streaming services about a young woman who did competitive horse barrel racing. I had never heard of that sport, but as the movie unfolded, I came to realize that the father's name was Cory Snyder -- so I had to look it up and it was the same baseball player I remembered from the 80's Topps sets (I think he was a baseball coach at the time of his daughter's accident). Very inspiring movie if you get a chance...

So what do we do now?
What year will 1988 Topps Wax Be A 100.00 a box now?
Or will I be around when it happens yes or no and maybe.
Winner gets a box of 1988 if they guess the exact date and time it happens 20 times during that year.
BTW I wont be around. So the reward is on one of you guys. I guess I could put that in my will. Never mind I got this one.
Not counting on inflation so I hope I'm around actually to see it. Seen crazier things happen I guess.

Also 1987 even though produced in MASS amounts. It is a cool set and box. Same goes for 1988

you can get a case for $800 right now on ebay. so $40 apiece right now, but no really good rookies. glavine is about it.

About the price of 1 box of todays whatever sport product.
I like how the 1988s dont expire but the gum will eventually win.

  • ndleondleo Posts: 4,243 ✭✭✭✭✭

What are the top junk era boxes (under $150) for "investment" purposes? My top 3 are:

1989 Hoops Basketball Series 1 and 2 - Besides Jordan and David Robinson, you can pull a lot of HOF'er and a Steve Kerr RC.
1990-91 Upper Deck French High Series Hockey - I think there are 11 HOF RCs in the set. Old school 36 pack box.
1989 Pro Set Series 2 Football - I think there are 12 HOF RCs in the set.

The only caveat is that I would stay away from loose Pro Set or Hoops boxes because from what I remember those packs were easy to search and the sequence was known. I think this was an especially huge issue with 1989 Hoops, either cases or FASC to get the best chance to pull a Jordan or Robinson.

    Mike
  • handymanhandyman Posts: 5,663 ✭✭✭✭✭

Like the above. And agree with the hoops. I don’t own a single box but I have about 4 packs with David on top. It was so predictable that I just prefer the 1 pack with David Robinson on top. Same with 1990 score baseball.

  • ElMagoStrikeZoneElMagoStrikeZone Posts: 1,818 ✭✭✭✭✭

I remember French hockey. There was a time when just the mention of Sergei Federov would start a stampede. :D

  • ndleondleo Posts: 4,243 ✭✭✭✭✭

With Fanatics getting the NBA license and doing spectacular job hyping basketball cards, I think the 1989 Hoops is about to explode. The Jordan and Robinson PSA 10's go for over $500, the in action Robinson is around $225, and you have a bunch in the $75-$100 range.

I think prices are being kept artificially low due to the searched pack issue. Maybe the market will start valuing the sealed cases and FASC boxes on a different scale?
