Very nice set, I think you will be seeing more of these at the cost has gone down for most pieces. I am also working on a set just like you did. Trying to buy them from LCS that I visit at home and on travel.
So far the $10 eagle ( find lots of raw, but very few slabbed and of the few I do see, either expensive or too many marks), $3 (only saw 2 raw so far) and type 2 dollar ( pricey) , these are the tough ones for me

I started my set today with the Type 1 gold dollar - NGC MS64 - from the Raleigh show. Looking forward to picking up some more nice pieces.
I'd love to see that dollar! Post here if you have a pic handy...
Here is a quick cell phone photo. I need to polish out a couple of scratches in the slab.
I may have to spend some time photoshopping out the prongs....
Ashland, I mentioned that I am going down a similar path. Pulled my coins together tonight. Not quite done, but it looks like I am 3/4 or 9/12 done. While I cannot say I got all coins for spot +5%, I did get most... For those liking old gold, many ms62 coins seem to be at spot +5-10% commonly...Alas, the $3 gold and type 2 dollar seem to be more, but affordable pieces seem to be there if one is patient... here are my 9 so far:

Terrific!
Your set 'shopped' into the Capitol holder works great!
How long did it take you to build this set Terry?
Thanks guys!
I got the type 1 dollar in the fall of 2016 and the $3 this past March. So around 2 1/2 years.
I just upgraded my 2.50 Liberty and it's not shown here. I may have it added to the Capitol picture one of these days...
Lovely presentation. I had a set mounted similarly in an old Bowers and Merena holder years ago. Had them all slabbed, then later sold them. One of my regrets. Well done, tough to fine them all nice without shelling out for all high-end grades.
Great looking set. It's obvious you took your time to carefully select exceptionally nice coins.

Bumping an old thread as it shows pics of a number of the other coins referenced here( but currently residing in storage).
The hunt continued, as I have been continuing to look for affordable gold coins to add to my type set. I recently have been able to add the last three that I could reasonably afford. The type 2 dollar, the type 3 dollar, and the $3 coin. These three will now join the others.

I decided to venture into this set as a number of the pieces were selling close to spot, so,it was also a bullion play. As I ventured into the pieces not sold at spot, I looked for affordable pieces that had either limited premiums over spot or were very affordable versus other similar coins of the same type.
Merging other discussion topics here, the majority of the funding for this set came from selling my type set coins. I have kept my 10 favorite type coins (either from look or buying experience) but sold the rest. Doing this, re energized my interest into trying to obtain coins, presented a set that was achievable to finish, and I felt that the prices were reasonable and downside risk was low. As many have said, but you always find it hard to believe, the selling taught me a lot about the coins. What i thought I saw, what others saw, and how dealers viewed their relationship with me ( as I sold many to LCS). I would encourage others to consider this, as it has been fun, and the number of sub ms63 gold coins that are around at decent prices is very good right now.
At some point I will get all the coins out of storage and take a group photo.
For those that had followed this and similar threads, I would be interested in what you would add to the coins above. I am slowly acquiring some of these in raw condition, and have a nagging desire to add a S and an O coin. I’d like a D or a C, but those may be too pricey for me. And as for the other gold type coins....as I said I am on a budget and those are out of reach for awhile.

Bumping old thread for update...took some coins out of safe deposit to snap a pick. Per this and other threads, I thought old gold was a decent value...generic coins low premium over melt...I have been able to put this together over the last few years...still figuring out what is next...maybe some different mints, maybe some upgrades, maybe some types have a raw no motto st gaudens...may go into foreign gold...

I am also slowly working on a gold set, I got 3 u.s. gold coins so far, my goal for the far future is to get all denominations type coins. After that I would work on a full type set 👍
I think though it will take me at least decade as I am also working on getting other u.s. coins and also working on a late 19th century proof coin type collection
Asheland, I just love your Capitol holder photos. Your $10 Indian looks like a real stunner, and that new $2.50 lib is pretty great too. Awesome group!

Thank you!
The $10 Indian is insane for the grade and I love the holder:
Love the $10 Indian and ms66 quarter eagle. I’m working on the gold type page in my dansco 7070 and I’m starting with the smaller coins in hopes that the price of gold comes down a little from $1550
Bumping the old thread so people can follow progression. You can see mine and others coins above, and hopefully it points out various progressions on collecting a gold type set.
Started as a quest to get to the 12 piece type set. Then added the 2 classic head pieces. Recently added a $5 1861 no motto piece (no pic yet) and today this piece.
This coin was just added to get a cheap New Orleans gold piece. I have a San Fran and a Denver already.
Thinking of a no motto $10, and maybe some day a CC, C, D mint although those are pricier.
I chose the different coin progression rather than upgrading my existing coins, but upgrading is a path others have taken.
I will try to get the coins out at the same time to post an upgraded set picture some day.
Last thoughts...as others say often...gold is addictive...and as the collection matures, like dirty/toned gold better....not sure why that is
I'm glad to see other people building gold type sets. They make a nice presentation for others to learn about the different types that were made. I see some very nice sets so far. Keep up the good work.
Here is my set in capital holders put out by Bowers many years ago and includes the early gold commems. I started with the classic head and they go up to 1986 because that's where the holder stops. I hope you all enjoy looking at them.
Gary
@SimpleCollector Nice addition! I am branching out to the different mints and eventually classic head and no motto stuff. Plenty out there to keep me busy!
