Ever seen a dmpl coin from 1795?

    @jmski52

It's pretty tedious reading through the innuendo etc, and excuse my ignorance on the coin, but here's a question - considering the die crack and weakness of the stars on the left side, along with the prooflike surfaces and great flow lines - it looks like a really early strike from a die that didn't last long. Were there other die combinations?

In an earlier post I attributed the die marriage and quoted the chief engraver on the problems with die hardening in 1794 and 1795, which explains the bisecting crack found on all examples of this DM.

The LM-7 die marriage is not just rare but very rare+, closer to 13 survivors in the R-6 rarity range of 13-30. There were not many struck, it is not surprising that Eliasberg and the OP example have proof-like surfaces in high grade. The Mint struggled with failing dies in the early years, and they used dies well beyond their useful life. There are many examples of lapping (grinding and polishing) of dies to reduce the severity of die cracks and clash marks on early coins.

    Nice coin, nice house!

Thanks, Nysoto - I had unfortunately glossed over your earlier post. What an attractive, well-preserved piece of history! TDN will be a good caretaker, no doubt.

Looks like an awesome house. Can't wait to see it completed :)

For those that might be interested. There are a ton of photos of Simpson's home online from when he put it up for sale in 2017. I wonder if he had a guest house? Of note, the house was offered for less than TDN's top coin.

I have never, in the last 40 years of this, ever ever seen a guy more appropriately called "Mr. Johnson".

Perhaps the "real" Mr. Johnson is the guy who dipped that coin. Will the "real" Mr. Johnson please come forward and tell us what he used for the dip.

That would be "Dr. Johnson", having the crack-out cojones of an ace grader and the conservation/doctoring skills needed to produce market-acceptable wholesomeness <3
Easily conceivable as either the work of an individual or the pairing of somewhat overlapping skill sets ;)
    RIP Martin :'(

Coins of this period, so crudely made, are the most unpredictable planchets to work with, whether taking off or adding color or crud :o .

Maybe I'm better at seeing under color on older coins and the other person too, but how many "surviving" planchets pre-1800 do you see? We both have crud removal and dipping skills. Though neither of us has seen more than a few 94's likely dippable, 95 H10c are "workable". Sorta. Mostly.
These little things were fragile and not well-made.
Are two heads better than one?
Or one guy has all the money and 1/2 the knowledge and 1/3 the skills? ETC ETC :#

OTOH I could care less what someone else knows about dipping 1896 proof coinage :#

Quite a beautiful estate you are building. But I think skimping out and opting for dual porto-potties instead of some nice stone bathrooms is something you might regret at re-sale.

I have no idea. A coin that small was not on my $25K target-of-opportunity list, so I wasn't paying attention.

We're talking a subtle and masterful micro-dip he, I and lots of others were capable of seeing because of technical knowledge and superb pattern recognition. But few others had his pre-disposition towards risk. ;)

I see pella windows in there. Ahh the good old days when the previous owner would take their top builders and architectural designers on very nice vacations.
Shame they no longer do that.
