For those of you who are Morgan Dollar lovers, or just love reading about the history of US coins, I have a couple questions:

What are your favorite Morgan Dollar books? Why do you like them?

I have a few, but am always looking to increase my knowledge.

    Wayne Miller’s “Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars”

    The population numbers are a bit dated but Miller’s approach to studying silver dollars is methodical and thorough. His photography is also excellent but I heard that all of the negatives were lost.

    Maybe I should elaborate. The books I have are:

    • The Official Red Book of Morgan Silver Dollars, Q. David Bowers.

    • The Morgan and Peace Dollar Textbook, Wayne Miller.

    • Crime of 1873: The Comstock Connection, Robert R. Van Ryzin.

    • Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan & Peace Dollars, Leroy C. Van Allen and A.. George Mallis.

    • The Top 100 Morgan Dollar Varieties: The VAM Keys, Michael S. Fey and Jeff Oxman.

    It has been a while since I’ve read them. So, maybe I will start by re-reading them. Then, maybe get some more reading! Can never have enough coin knowledge!

    Mitchell, does Miller have an Encyclopedia, also? Or, were you thinking of the Van Allen/Mallis Encyclopedia?

    Miller authored two books. The first one has a copyright date of 1976.
    It discusses the Morgan and Peace dollar series by date and mintmark.
    Uses black and white photos. Very little if anything is devoted to VAMs.
    The title for the book is An Analysis of Morgan and Peace Dollars.

    His second book was published in the early 1980's. It also discusses Morgan
    and Peace dollars by date and mintmark. There are chapters devoted to
    grading, prooflike and proof and Branch mint proof dollars. Varieties
    are also discussed but only the major ones. The photos of the toned
    pieces are incredible, the ones pictured are @AuroraBorealis quality. The
    pics with each of the dollars are nice enough to figure out which pieces he
    up graded from the previous edition. It would be nice see the coins imaged
    either by Todd @blu62vette , @messydesk, or True Views. Yes I know
    that there have been any nicer collections formed since than, but till
    the time he sold his collection it was the dream of many.

    Is that 2nd Miller book sold anywhere? I love to add a copy to my library.

    I mixed up my titles. Yes, the book I was thinking of is "The Morgan and Peace Dollar Textbook".

    The first edition isn't a bad book either.

    The Crime of 1873 is a very under-rated book. Van Ryzin did a good job of combining several threads of history and the Carson City mint.

    The Textbook I have has a black hard cover with silver lettering. No copyright date on the inside copyright page.....unless I missed something. Pics are color-ish, but mostly have a blueish tint to them.

    I agree. I really enjoyed reading The Crime of 1873. And, I'm going to read it again! Hope to find more similar to that one!

    Q. David Bowers book, Silver Dollars & Trade Dollars Of The United States - A Complete Encyclopedia. This is a comprehensive book on silver dollars in two volumes and over 2,000 pages. Bowers is a great researcher and story teller and the coins are covered in detail.

    My favorite is John Highfill's Silver Dollar Encyclopedia. Mr. Highfill is from my home state of Oklahoma. I did a book review on it a while back.

    The "An Analysis of Morgan and Peace Dollars" is a paper back.
    The "Morgan and Peace Dollar Textbook" is a hard back.

    Bowers-Brochart book on US Silver dollars has better overall information than most of the others mentioned. However, all of the Morgan dollar books are old and lack new information from more modern research.

    Is anyone aware of someone working a revision or new book on Morgan dollars?
