World coin list 131 TOMORROW

World coin price list #131 will be posted TOMORROW, Thursday, at 11 AM Eastern time at www.fsrcoin.com/131.htm

It has been a while, to accumulate enough interesting new material. Forgive my grousing about today’s coin environment. So different from my ‘70s & 80s when one could really BUY so much cool stuff. From auctions like Jess Peters, NASCA, Coin Galleries, Dale Seppa, etc, with good but inexpensive single coins and juicy group lots. And no fershlugginer slabs. And less competition from wise guys. My record was getting 631 lots from one NASCA auction! Mostly just a few dollars each. Tied with 631 from one Seppa sale! That’s how I mostly built my collections, like the Canadian I sold recently on my lists.

Now if I get TWO coins from an auction it feels like hitting the jackpot. I receive these huge fat catalogs from, like, Heritage, and there’s NOTHING TO BUY in them. All that fancy overgraded and overpriced slabbed stuff. A lot of the less expensive "meat-and-potatoes” coins have moved to eBay, but good luck trying to buy there anything reasonably graded and priced. It's searching for the proverbial needle in a haystack, among thousands of junk listings.

And of course there also used to be a whole lot of guys sending out pricelists like mine. Remember Haag, DAP, Dorego, Reed, Limarc, etc? I bought so many coins that way too.

I think I belong in a museum.

Best regards,

Frank S. Robinson

    @fsrcoin,

This belongs elsewhere, like the BST forum for world and ancient material. Good luck.

This forum is not for commercial activity.

@EVillageProwler how is this any different than Error Coin News that is constantly being plugged? That is merely a catalog or price list as well.

I guess I haven't noticed it (I do not read every thread here). If it is as you say it is, then it is no different and should be moved to the BST forum for world and ancients too.

Mr. Robinson has written one of the very best books that I have ever read about the joys of being a coin collector.

Accordingly, he gets a pass (from me) on his modestly commercial post.

I manage money. I earn money. I save money .
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.

    Copyright dated 1992, 210 pages.

It looks like I paid $10 for my copy and it must have come from Mr. Grady or Mr. Burns. This was twenty years ago.

While I am not advocating bringing out the torches and pitchforks, I have always felt that the consensus here was not to be a commercial forum.

I'm a fan of QDB's books on collecting -- does that mean we should welcome StacksBowers to advertise here? Alberto Varesi publishes a large set of catalogs (not FPL's) on Italian States coinage -- does that mean we should welcome his auction advertisements here? I can cite other examples too.

I do not want to turn this into a big deal, but honestly I think the rationale here is a bit awkward. Where do we draw the line?

And, btw, I recognize I am not the Forum Police (tm), hence I have not flagged this thread. But, I sincerely think this is not what we should have. Just my opinion.

    Respectfully,

PS The more we debate this here, the more this thread gets viewed and the more likely that the OP's site gets viewed (out of curiosity or whatever). So for his supporters, there is that possible side effect. (Yes, I viewed his site out of curiosity.)

I am simply convinced that Mr. Robinson is the real deal when it comes to being a numismatist.

I would be very much more worried about atrophy than commercialism on this forum.

I have a copy of his book, which was recommended to me by my first trusted coin dealer. The book has done really well in the secondary market. I joke that my books have appreciated more than my coins! Years ago I traveled to Albany to meet Frank at a coin show; I was looking for Ming Rebel Chinese coins at the time. He handed me two boxes, said, here take your time, I'll be wandering around for another hour or two. I've got a bunch of good stories about dealing with FSR; class act.
