A **Quartet** of Nice Key-Date Cents

Right place, right time. We recently had the rare privilege to purchase one collector's lifetime accumulation of coins, including cents complete from 1793 to 2018, as well as a horde of unpicked, unsearched mint and proof sets starting in 1950! (The gentleman is getting up in years and began collecting when he was 12.) And a complete run of matte proof Lincolns from 1909 VDB to 1916, all certified by PCGS or NGC. There were many other nice coins that will be coming down the pike. But these three stand out. One is the rarest cent from the second half of the 19th century, the 1909 VDB is the rarest cent among all cent issues in the first half of the 20th century, and the 1964 SMS cent is the rarest from the second half of the 20th century (and a market area we have specialized in; please see much more on our website if you like).

1856 Flying Eagle Cent PR61 PCGS CAC
A really nice Snow-9 1856 Flying Eagle cent, PR61 PCGS CAC green bean, nearly everyone who sees this asks "Why isn't it a 62?" Very sharply struck for a Snow-9, with problem-free surfaces. $14,500 delivered via cleared check or EFT. I have made a little video of this on my Instagram account if you want to take a look there. These seldom appear in auctions (especially this nice), so price comparisons are difficult. The PCGS Price Guide is $14,500.

1909 VDB Matte Proof Lincoln PR64RB PCGS
The key to the Lincoln cents in matte proof format, worth 10 or more 1909-S VDBs! Attractive color throughout with the identifying diagnostics bold and an impeccable strike. Here's a link to the larger blowup shot of the Trueview (click it to enlarge): https://pcgs.com/cert/35044932
SOLD

1964 SMS Cent MS66RD PCGS
VDB Coins has bought and sold privately more of the 1964 SMS coins of all denominations in the past few years than any other dealer, so public auction records are scarce; most of the coins trade hands privately, and infrequently. This cent is, in our opinion, as nice or nicer than the recent surprise MS67RD cent that appeared in a Heritage auction, where it brought $15,600 despite having a large area of die grease on Lincoln's shoulder. $16,000 via cleared check or EFT.

1916 Lincoln Cent Matte Proof OGH PR65RB PCGS CAC
Rarest of the matte proofs save for the 1909 VDB above, certified in an old green holder (OGH). The photos are from the Heritage auction appearance quite a while back, and they are not great. The surfaces have a lot more life and vibrancy and show the desirable "pebbled" or mattelike texture characteristic, but some flecks also do appear, most notably one on the right wheat ear. This one really needs a Trueview. Offered at SOLD.

Thanks for looking!

Kind regards,

George
