That does look great. I would love to get a cabinet too, but I don't really have the spare room in my home office. Also, I'm not sure how I'd efficiently use one since I seldom even use my fancy trays.

Anyway, congrats and I hope you enjoy it!

Time to start an ancients collection? It's quite a nice cabinet, how did you find it?

Put some velvet in a few holes and you should get some nice toning on the coins.

  • bidaskbidask Posts: 13,834 ✭✭✭✭✭

Insider thanks for the tip regards velvet.

I bought off ebay and it was shipped from Europe......advertised as oak .

If it was from a tree here I'd say red oak , I don't know if they have red oak in europe but they probably have something similar

Nice! Are you sure it's oak? Coin cabinets have traditionally been made out of mahogany , due to it's relative inertness, so the wood doesn't let off gases that will affect the coins.

I had a mahogany cabinet built last year, I've been really pleased with it!

    Matt,

If you don't mind, how much did yours cost and from whom did you buy it? Yours looks great, and I assume custom-built to your specs. (What are the specs, btw?)

If you feel it more appropriate to respond via PM, kindly do so.

I just realized that while the cabinets are awesome, the trays are a problem for me. I used square tags, like CNG, slightly less than 1.75"x1.75", so nearly all the British cabinets are not good for me (round recesses in trays). I also have slabs (shock!) and would need a way to showcase them too.

    Nice piece, quite handsome.

Generally mahogany is the choice of wood for a coin cabinet and will not be as likely to lead to unwanted toning. I believe walnut or cherry are also alternatives. All of these hardwoods are expensive compared with oak. But they are preferred.

As important or maybe even more so is the stain or varnish.

If you’re worried about wood gases, just buy an antique cabinet. I’m pretty sure there isn’t much gas to leak out once the wood is 100 years old.

Generally though, ancient and medieval coins are pretty strong and resilient, they have lasted hundreds, sometimes thousands of years under the ground and the cabinet isn’t going to damage them too much.

Not a cabinet, obviously, but I'm going to take the opportunity to tout the Abafil Box of 18 again. (They don't make the outer box, but they can be had elsewhere easily enough.)

@MattTheRiley's cabinet is gorgeous, too, but I wouldn't be able to leave my house for long without worrying about the safety of the contents.

And for my second post to this thread, I'm going to hijack the thread again for a moment AND break the rules about offering things for sale! I have a couple of old coin cabinets at home that are missing a lot of the trays. If anyone here is handy enough to make his own cabinet trays, I'll sell the pair for a $100 donation to my local dog shelter, plus shipping if necessary. (Pics available on request.)

This is nothing as nice as the above wooden cabinets. But, I just wanted to share my affordable small storage for my 2 x 2 snap locks I recently bought, but I will have to beef up the handle for the weight of this will be more than the handle can stand. At least now I can put my favorite ones in one of the ten drawers. Maybe I should of gotten the smaller 5 drawer one.
