I love the second letter! So hard to find that damned 1815!

He should have looked it up in the Red Book.
Wonder if he ever got accused of being a troll.

That Young Numismatist turned out to be quite legendary in the Civil War. He was born in 1840, so was only 15 when he wrote those letters while attending Williams College, which he graduated from in 1858 at 18!

He built quite the collection before his death - 3,500 coins, which looks like his father donated to the University of Chicago in 1886 upon his own passing?

Dear Sir,
I am very much obliged to you for that document with information conveyed in your letter. I am sorry to trouble you again but I would like to ask if a work? ???? that “Eckl??? V Du Bois on coins of gold + silver of all nations struck within the past Century” published at the assay office of the mint Philadelphia 1842 is for sale or distribution. If for sale please inform me of the price and if for distribution please send me a copy. I will send the amount of the postage.
Yours truly,
Char.D Sanford
P. S.
Don’t direct your answer to Prof CD Sanford as you did on the last document as I am only a student and not a professor. If you will write me please inform me if those new cents are in circulation. I haven’t seen any up this way.
Dear Sir,
I write to find if cents of the years 1793,1815, + 1799 can be obtained at the mint I have cents of every year they have been coined up to 1828? The first I believe was on 1793. Except those above mentioned. If you have any in your possession which you can easily spare I should like to have you send those to me If you cannot obtain them please inform me of the name of ????? ????? or give me any other information respecting them which would prove of interest to one engaged in collecting coin???? ?? ?? I would also ask if there are any half cents ??? Coined with a liberty cap behind the head like cents of the date of 1795 + 96. If there are any please send me one or two of those also. The postage stamps enclosed will I suppose cover the expenses of sending??

I have an 1815 cent, unfortunately it was only gotten around to being struck in 2018.
There are numerous letters requesting information about 1815 cents in the Mint archives - particularly after 1854 and the public became aware of experiments to reduce the one-cent coin's size.
You seem to know the answers to all my questions.

Lol, not off the top of my head, I just type really fast and am pretty good with google and other searches. I learn as much from trying to find answers as I do reading others answers.
