Wonder if folks returning coins on Ebay realize that the label does not include insurance?

I am always happy to take back a coin that a customer is not pleased with. Even covering the return shipping is no big deal as it is capped at about 6 bucks.

Received a coin back today that had no evidence of insurance (unless the buyer uses a private carrier.) This was a $3000 coin. Got back fine and the refund has been issued, but I think a lot of buyers believe that Ebay will cover them for a shipping loss and as I understand it...that is not true.

What makes you think that eBay isn't self-insuring the packages or using a 3rd party themselves? It would be ludicrous for a shipper of that magnitude to pay USPS for insurance as private rates or self insurance are at least a factor of 10 cheaper.

I don't buy insurance on packages of less than $500 for the same reason. I self insure myself and I'm not nearly the magnitude shipper that eBay is.

JM...I believe that i read here that the Ebay label covers shipping only and the buyer must cover insurance. I'll do some digging.

    Paypal pays claims.

Signature USPS tracking is all that is needed. (I do not really consider the post office losing a non-registerd package that is not insured with no red flags all over it)

    I self insure.

I'm not sure if I misunderstood you. Was it shipped back on eBay labels or by the buyer himself?

If you offer FREE return shipping on a $3000 coin, how much would you want to pay for their approval service (since you already paid to get it too them)?

Ebay label. Ebay does not cover insurance. Sender must do that on their own dime.

Take $1 from every package you ship and throw it into a savings account. You'll have enough to cover your losses and then some before you lose a package, in all probability.

I mostly self insure as well. Not on $3000 though. Buyer returned the coin with an Ebay return label. Does not cover a loss though but I am not sure that the buyer knew that. Could get ugly in the event of a lost package. rare certainly but it does happen.

Glad to see this as I did a couple of returns last week (stamps!) and I was wondering what the deal was with these labels. I would’ve been fine with paying return shipping myself. Also, I didn’t like one bit how eBay’s nagware threatened to cancel one of my returns. (I put two lots in the same envelope, as anyone would.)

So, sellers, can I be a better buyer by working with you to get around the new system? Or do you prefer this way?

I get few returns. Seems though that the Ebay system is the way to go as the final value fee will get snagged if you do it on your own.

Where does it say this? and how does the original seller buy this insurance??? You can't buy it after the fact.

Honestly, it's not exactly clear what the terms are. They do NOT supply insurance, but they do supply buyer and seller guarantees. So, what takes precedence?

It should be made clear to the person returning the coin. Many posting on this thread are long time veterans of the site and still don't understand all of the nuances. As Ebay is out of the transaction financially on a refunded item (no fees) I can't imagine that they want to get hit with a $3000 claim for a lost package. As a seller i don't want the buy left hanging either.

All good until it goes bad.

  • Wow! Thanks for the information.

I've had a couple of unreasonable returns hoping they will get lost to see what happens! >:)

Doesn't cover insurance but you can stick the $2.66 label on a big box ( too big to walk out the PO with) tape the hell out of it and call that your insurance.

The USPS won't let you ship a big box for $2.66. They will collect the correct postage from one of the 2 parties.

Insurance isn't available for return shipments. If either you or the seller prefers that an item be returned with insurance, purchase your own return postage instead of using the return shipping label provided.

Unfortunately when you print one of those eBay supplied labels there is no option to include insurance, So you have 2 choices which are ship it at your peril or buy insurance separately. Maybe eBay should do like some sellers and self-insure by adding a $2 convenience fee paid by the returner and pooled to pay claims.

The issue from eBay's standpoint isn't the fees on THAT transaction. They are trying to create customer satisfaction (ala Amazon) to create return buyers.

I always wondered, if a buyer returned and item, and it got lost, using package return service. Who would be responsible ??

As I understand it, the buyer is responsible to get the item to the seller. On a guaranteed return sale, Ebay may drag the seller into the muck. Maybe as jmlanzaf suggests, Ebay would eat the loss.

I've done this. If the seller gets hit for extra postage he/she shouldn't have sent me crap.
The label doesn't say $2.66 only return service. Ebay says you'll be charge $2.66 if you use their label. Doesn't restrict packaging.

I have seen a lot of $500-$2000 items sent uninsured, like usps never loses packages? Maybe 1/500-1000 but I would not to get "unlucky". It is always a fear when shipping. Does Hugh Wood cover returns from customers?

What I'm saying is that the USPS folks will likely catch it and bill one party or the other for the difference. Most likely it will be the recipient unless you take it to a window where they'll probably whack the sender. I've had it happen where a clerk questioned the amount the sender paid but chose not to ask me for the difference.
