Jefferson Nickel Variety of the Week: Proof 1952 RED-008 Discovery

Alright crew, this is why we do what we do! Not until the last Cherry Pickers (6th Edition) came out, I got a little interested in the Re-Engraved Dies (REDs) on the early proof issues. Then one thing led to another and, what the heck, I started looking for them. There are Jefferson REDs for 1950, 1952, 1953 and 1954.

It's interesting to think about proof dies being polished enough to fade out the pony tail and ribbon. Then for so many 1952 proof dies to manually be re-engraved to put some of the details back into the die!

Amazing to think there are now 8 reported REDs for 1952 and it doesn't bother me in the slightest that my discovery is number 8!

Normal ribbon and pony tail on a 1952 Proof

1952 RED-008 - You can see the diagonal line extending from the bottom of the ribbon into the pony tail. Once you look at enough proofs, you will begin to notice (if you happen to be looking at one that has been re-engraved) these lines that don't look natural or carry the normal flow of the original design. Under close magnification (16x), you see raised lines that were etched into the die to strike the coin. Pretty cool when you see one!
