1960 was the first year naming the Topps AS rookie team on the cards - McCovey's rookie is an example. The first traditional trophy cards are in 1961. Topps named the team which had a player at each position, 3 OF a LHP and a RHP. There are several gaps where no team is named. I believe at one time they had a banquet associated with the naming of the team or at least issued some sort of formal announcement. The '63 program (which I have scene copies of) has a mock up of a '63 solo card for Pete Rose and his trophy appears on the '64 card.

The first Topps Rookie Banquet Program was held in NY in October 1959. It appears the Banquets were held continiuisly in some format unti at least 2004 . In 1959 and 1960 Topps included Elect Your Favorite Rookie paper inserts in wax pack. They also distributed them to organizations such as the Boy Scouts. At the banquet the winners were honored as a prelude to putting them on the next years' rookie award cards. The Rookie Awrads became Topps Acheivemnt Awards sometime after 1966 ( not sure when)' but they continued and were numbered consecutively through at least 2004 ( latest program I have found)

Thanks Al. Every time you post I learn something. Really appreciate your contributions to the board. I was not aware teams were named for the years that no trophies appeared on the cards or that there was the ability for collectors to vote at one time.

Have never scene the ‘59 McCovey mock-up with the ‘60 picture. That is really cool.
