Color Folks - Framed Type Set Toners

StrikeOutXXXStrikeOutXXX Posts: 3,352 ✭✭✭✭✭

Got this at a local auction today. Typically these things are usually scrubbed and cleaned (and at times toned over nicely but still crap underneath) but thought this set was original circulated coins and some decent Unc toners. Nobody else seemed to pay it much attention, so home it came.

I'm not sure if the consignor swapped out some coins prior, just found it strange for the most part - the silver coins did not tone much (and there were no single toners in the auction) but the clad pieces colored up nicely.

Photo setup sucks right now but you should get the idea. Think there are any "+" in the group? Does PCGS typically have issues with "Frame-Toning"?

SBA - one of the prettiest in the group

Bicentennial Kennedy

Bicentennial Washington

'45 Jefferson War Nickel

'76 Jefferson

The Silver coins didn't color-up nearly as much as the others. The few that had some toning were mostly on the reverse:

Peace had a little on the reverse

As did the Morgan

Merc

Roosevelt

Washington

Kennedy

I think that your suspicion of the clad coins being placed in the holder before the sale may have some merit. The linear type of toning seen on the SBA, Washies, and 76 Jeff is usually associated with government packaging and not cardboard toning.

Nice. I'd have come home with that set too.

I did one of those back in 1976. I've updated it here and there since, but some of the coins toned up nicely, in my case the 90% silver ones were toned nicely. It was the spring board to me beginning a 7070 type set in the 80's. Yours is a nice set!

I've bought a few of these. I got the following Peace dollars out of them:

I've seen that type of target toning come out of Danscos.

Not sure how it affects this particular set, but one reason I presume so many coins in these types of holders are toned is because they are scrubbed--fresh metal mixed with the frame's environment. If the silver coins developed a skin before being placed in here, that may have prevented the reactions needed to tone them up in an appreciable manner.
