I've always collected early federal coinage by date and major variety and not so much by die marriage. How has the Internet changed the estimated rarity for early federal variety coins or were the initial estimates by Overton and others fairly accurate?

like most other things internet-related, collectors now have access to a whole lot more information than they used to have when it was "just books." Sharing of information on what die marriages are, what to look for to find the scarce ones, who else has had success finding the scarce ones, how many are actually known in collectors' hands, etc -- all that has helped to drive down the rarity rating for a number of half dime die marriages. R8s have become R7s; R7s have become R6s (or R5s); and so on

It is the number one reason for the bifurcation of the coin market IMO

to piggyback on what JJSingleton posted, there is a "bifurcation" of how the internet has affected my perception. it has helped sort out what it really rare(as explained by other members) but it has also made me a more discriminating collector for more common coins. with so many examples available I can make a more informed choice.

Agree. In addition to making a more informed choice, for common coins, there's also no urgency to buy if it can really be purchased at any time. It's better to wait till you know more and can make a good selection.

Bottom line when you have error coins time after time that would not pass quality control something is not right !

Absolutely, we need more folks like you to be "watchdogs" and dictators of what should be allowed in the world! I'm backing you 100.% You need to watch this guy. There is no way the coins he has could escape detection!

    Thank goodness they do! :p
